apparently this bead gives "extra thrust while in the air". What does that even mean, and how do I activate it?? I don't seem to be jumping any higher, I don't have a double jump or air dash.

Could be poor wording. I think it grants one additional use of Air Impulse. If you hold down and tap attack as you land on an enemy/destructible object, Penitent One will gain a little bit of air. You're ordinarily only able to perform this twice before needing to land. I think the Big Toe just increases the number of times this can be performed.
