Sword and thorns
Does having more thorns on the sword/"mana"bar make it deal more damage? And what else is there that can increase its damage?

The only way to increase sword damage is to level it up in the altars.

There's also an item you can equip in your rosary that increases damage but it's so minor that it's barely noticeable.

EDIT: There's also 2 Mea Culpa hearts that can increase damage.

Heart of Oils is definitely not worth it. Enemies deal around two times more damage to you (if I had to guess it's somewehere between 2.2 and 2.5 times) and your damage increases just sliiiiiightly. I tested it a few days ago on the Archcathedral Rooftops enemies out of curiosity. Disappointing, really.

Well, I used it since I found it, I think I had 5 Mea Culpa Altars found at the time and the Heart reduced hits needed to kill most enemies to two or three. But it really does increase damage You take, I would say it's two times, but its enough for every end-game boss to take you down in one hit. Fight with Quirce was a real pain in the arse for the first three-or-so deaths.
Even with defence increasing beads.

You're right, it might be that little bit of damage needed to kill enemies in less hits, but at the point where I tested it (not sure how many altars I've visited at that point, but I was on my way to Quirce after getting through the Chalice ordeal and he was the last boss I had to defeat to progress so I guess I had pretty much visited all the altars by that time) it wasn't worth it compared to the drawbacks.
And ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ you are right about Quirce, he was the first boss I tried to defeat with the Heart of Oils equipped in my first playthrough and he just one shot me with his charge attacks. It took me a few deaths to realize that this happened because of the sword heart.

I did Melquiades and Exposito with the Heart and they were child's play compared to Quirce. Especially the first one, Mel, I took out these hands with one combo with D-Pad Down and then his face with D-Pad Up which took, i think, two/two and a half bar of his HP. But again, getting hit by his rod even once meant death for my Penitent One, BUT overall I would recommend OP to get this Heart if her parry/dodge's game strong. If not, the first Heart you get is IMO the best and I feel no shame to admit that xD

"First heart"? Which one do you mean? You can take several routes starting from Albero, so "first one" is kinda dependent on which path you choose first ':D

The parry frames extending one. Heart of Virtuous Pain. Did the-almost-last-boss with it yesterday, cuz i couldn't get her parry timings right, and when I did it was too late to change it anyway xD
