You still change equipment etc but from a character perspective you are playing not just "mage" but you are playing Elontir, fancy pants mage from hollahoola.
Thankfully they have a good GW author behind it so here's hoping.
You can't customize your character in Grim Dawn other than gender (still an awesome game though).

Chaosbane is a Diablo like loot driven game. Gear/weapons have different tiers and different stats which change how the player looks, there is also a vendor & what looks like some sort of crafting bench but also isn't available as of yet in this beta stage.
Player customisation is far more complex than Diablo though, you get quite a lot of skills with multiple tiers to each skill & a small passive tree similar to Path of Exile but not on the same massive scale.
