Wtf am I supposed to do with Afghanistan?
How tf am I supposed to play them? I was looking up some older threads and one appeared to give pretty good advice (to only attack them at the start once you have 20 agents and enough money in March to take the south in one go) but after reloading multiple times it seems the Mujahideen are scripted to always attack you the first of March, killing any chances of you taking the south immediately before they attack. So what can I do then? I don't really have an agent problem but the money loss if ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ me completely. I can't really afford to turn off any of the money making buildings for obvious reasons and I also can't risk turning off the agent buildings either (at least until I completely defeat the Mujahideen, which obviously I've never managed as of now). So what can I do in the first few months to make sure I can win the war as quickly as possible?

research, afghanistan is all about researching industrialization and using soviet aid to develop your own industrial base to fund agents and such.

though i guess some other people have other ways, some people here are crazy good to find unusual ways to do stuff.

Yeah I get research's essential however for the first few months in 1989 I can't seem to find any way to make a profit without turning off some agent making buildings, which I'm not sure I can afford to do. I try to get as many trade partners as I possibly can and while the extra money I get at the start of some months ( I assume that's supposed to be the soviet aid right?) is helpful it isn't enough for me to attack or defend the territory I'm currently holding. Also in the first party event you get, about arresting the generals or the generals plus Tanai what is the best option there for me to take?

Afghanistan is a bit tricky here: you need to earn 10 agents and 6 money in order to fend off an attack from the opposition, you need 9 money and 20 agents to take back control of one piece of territory. You MUST make sure when enemy launch an offensive on your face, you have 10 agents and 6 money to immediately defeat them otherwise when you lose a territory you will be lose a lot of income. Najbullah is easier than the Khalqists. Just make sure you build research institute and research SORM as soon as possible so that you could help the USSR to defeat the separatists and help the socialist camp. Otherwise when the USSR collapses in 1991 your party unity will drop to the lowest level and you will be defeated

You actually do not need make too much profits in 1989 because the USSR will bail you out. Just defeat the opposition and try to advance when you have enough resources and defeat them immediately without dragging the war any longer otherwise your control will diminish by time. When you researched SORM you can interact with other countries and trade with them

this, i actually (to much chagrin of many) beated afghanistan as socdem Najbullah (Watan) and besides investing early in one or two research institutes (and putting that technocrat minister) the other secret was timing the fight response to fend off the mujaheddin. however i went industrial line first and then SORM line

Is there any randomness as to when you get soviet aid? In the few playthroughs I did the aid came the first day of the month though it was very random, like I got some in June for example but none in July or August (I actually don't remember I'm just giving examples, basically it wasn't consistent.) What's the reason for this? Also, what ministers do you suggest I should use?

Soviet aid comes every three months (March, June, September and December) and at the very beginning of every year. These aid packages give you about 6 money and agents. You should put Kestmund and Watanjar in charge (Kestmund speeds up Research and increases Standard of Living while Watanjar increase Agent Network growth). Once you have enough network producing buildings (including completing the intelligence branch), replace Watanjar with Qadir. Quadir cuts Westalgie which lowers the chance that the Opposition will attack you.

Here's a trick regarding offensives: when you're ready, start your offensive on the last day of the month. Wait until the next month begins (do not wait until the 7th of that month, though) and immediately send 3 reinforcements to conquer a region. Why? Because the Opposition CANNOT attack you if you are already on the Offensive or on the Defensive (the exception is March, 1989 in which the rebels will attack you regardless of what you do or don't do) and the Opposition ALWAYS begins their attack on the first day of the month (the chances of the attack depends on your Westalgie).

Thank you a lot of the advice, will try it later. One final thing though, do you recommend to attack first before the Mujahideen attack on March or let them attack, defend, and the attack myself?

Okay, here's how to defeat the Mujahideen: DO NOT attack them at all the first 3 months of 1989. There is no way you can amass 20 agents that fast and the Opposition WILL attack you in March of 1989 (even if you are on the offensive, your progress will be reset and you will be thrown onto the defensive). Instead, let them attack you the first year. Then attack them at the end of 1989. Then defend throughout 1990 and attack at the end of 1990, then defend until the war is over. In my experience, the Opposition attacked in March and August of 1989, February and August of 1990 and February of 1991 (the last of the Opposition was crushed by event in August). To help reduce the number of times the Opposition attacks you, keep Westalgie as low as you can.

Your tips worked very well for almost my entire run, though in 1991 everything went to ♥♥♥♥ and I don't know how to prevent that. I had all territories under control by January 91, but the next few months the complete dismantlement of the socialist camp ♥♥♥♥♥♥ me over. In August before the August Coup happened the USSR disbanded the Warsaw Pact, which caused a party unity hit, nothing crazy though. Then they disbanded the CMEA and it dropped to 10. Instant game over as I already had used the oil channel in Libya and didn't save India from becoming liberal.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this? In all the events about socialist countries liberalizing in 1989 I couldn't pick any of the options to help them, even though I had enough agents to do so (I assume this is because of not having SORM right?). I never managed to research it, I'd say over half of the aid the soviets gave me I was forced to use it to fight the Mujahideen and the little I had left over I used to build research buildings, but they weren't enough to have it fully researched by August 1991. Even if I had the 30 agents to help the State Committe, the CMEA event destroyed me before that event even happened, so is there anything I can do to help the CMEA nations without having SORM? Or am I essentially forced to use the oil channel specifically for this event?

Do not research any other technologies and only focus on getting SORM first.Research institutes will help you reduce the time of research
