TL;DR: It depends on whether you are looking for a sandbox action-RPG/FPS (like Freeman), or a sandbox RTS/FPS hybrid (like Total Conflict: Resistance). There are some fundamental differences, but both games can be fun, despite being rough around the edges and having their own share of problems.

In detail:

- Freeman was obviously abandoned in a janky, buggy state, but currently there's no alternative for a modern-day, infantry-only Mount and Blade clone. Similarly to that game, this is a sandbox action-RPG title, so you can generate your own character and level them up, hire troops to build your party, take on quests, recruit named companions (and assign them to lead their own troops), and eventually take over all cities and unite the game world.

IMHO the game has two major issues: some game breaking bugs (which you can work around with the Cheat menu that you can bring up with the End button), and the clearly untested/unbalanced features that the developers brought in late in development (such as a janky city management screen, a next-to-useless trading module, or the absolutely random combat support options, like artillery and gunship support). I'm also not really fond of the tedious micromanagement aspects of the game (you must equip all your troops individually with armor and weapons matching their skills, which can take quite some time later as you start expanding your army).

- Total Conflict: Resistance looks similar to Mount and Blade and Freeman on a basic level (as it also features a World Map and combat maps during fights), but that game is not a sandbox action-RPG. It's a grand strategy / RTS / FPS hybrid instead, where you manage your own splinter country (instead of a guerrilla faction), can build up several battalions from the get go (if you have the resources, that is), and can also build/deploy air, land and sea vehicles besides infantry.

Not being an aRPG also means that there is no character creation and no levelling system. Instead, T:CR is using a detailed tech tree to unlock new weapons, vehicles and equipment, and also has a detailed logistics system in place for producing food, ammo and equipment for your battalions.

Currently, the game is already playable, but still pretty rough around the edges: most of the negative feedback mentions the braindead combat AI, the cheating World Map AI (not bound to any resources and tech tree limitations), and the janky GUI which makes the whole logistics system much more difficult to use and understand than it otherwise is.

Total Conflict Resistance, and by a thousand miles. Don't buy Freeman OP, it's a trash game made by scammers.

Neither. They're both junky buggy messes.

Save your money and stop buying early access scams.

Since I noticed that there are various theories and legends about the origin of the game, I decided to clarify this matter.

1.
The game was directed by two girls: Valerie Lee and Eva Melamori and was created by a company registered and operating in China.

2.
Valerie Lee was born in Ukraine but has been living and working in China since 2018. Her real name is Tina Khristi. In 2018, Valerie aka Tina went to China where she co-founded L2 Game Studios (the company where the SWPT game was created). L2 Game Studios (later transformed into L2 Games) is registered and operating in China. The entire additional team that created SWPT comes from China. Valerie aka Tina is also the co-founder of KK Softworks (China), successor of KK Game Studios (Ukraine). This company released only one game - Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare (which was very poorly rated by players) and started working on another (still unfinished) game - Her War.

3.
Eva Melamori also comes from Ukraine and was an Environment Designer at KK Game Studio. She collaborated with Valerie aka Tina on SWPT.

4.
To summarize: SWPT was created in China and was mostly made by Chinese programmers, however the project was managed by Valerie and Eva from Ukraine. Even though the names of the female characters are Ukrainian / Russian and the design of the buildings and ruins is European, the entire game code was prepared by the Chinese team (you can enter the game code and see for yourself).

5.
KK Game Studios / KK Softworks games:
Freeman: Guerrilla Warfare - completed and released
Her War - unfinished, not available in EA

L2 Games Studios / L2 Games games:
She Will Punish Them - unfinished, available in EA
Beauty And Violence: Valkyries - unfinished and no longer available in EA

Total conflict is made by putinist/fascist russians, so, no, do not even consider buying it

While it's still heavily in development and no public version is available for it yet, those who prefer a new "Mount and Blade with guns" type of game should watch out for Vogur.

The game was admittedly inspired by Freeman's premise, and is meant to be a "proper" M&B-like sandbox aRPG set in modern times. Mostly a one-developer-show, the game has been quietly in the works for a couple years now, and has recently reached the stage where they can start implementing the actual visuals and game UI. Janik, the project lead just made an announcement about this on the game's Discord channel, which I copied to the game's Reddit sub.

If you want to learn more about the game, check out its FAQ. If you want to join the project's Discord server, use this link[discord.gg].

There's no ETA for any public release yet, but here's hoping it'll happen some time this year.

Its not about "wasting" money, its about not supporting buttholedevs like them, that abandon multible games but still recieve money from steam, because steam gives a ♥♥♥♥ about devs like that.

It's actually a really good game and is getting regular updates.
Now aside for being developed by Russians, there is absolutely no reference at all to real world politics and the devs have kept away from those topics.

I actually already own it, I just thought the comment was stupid, wanting to boycott it because a Russian made it.

It's a great game, but it has not been updated in a long time, and I hear that the devs are actually scammers that have multiple abandoned projects.

I never played total conflict, but probably total conflict. This game is just that garbage
