Replacing dead and getting them equipped is too much of a hassle. So for me it's always better to have less troops, but experienced and well-equipped, so 95% of engagements will be a full victory without any KIA on our side, and with an army immediately ready for next battle.
I equip my troops with the basics or better still with whatever I can scrounge. Of course buying weapons and gear is expensive, so I don't bother with that if I can help it. And if they, die they are quickly replaced by others just like them. I don't bother playing with dolls, autoequip and auto form up is good enough for my crew. If someone goes into battle without a weapon, well, the Caligula in me is pleased. Maybe I was on the Eastern Front in a previous life.
If things go horribly bad, there's always the dev console to provide the last will and testament of that rich uncle I never knew I had.
i wouldnt use autobattle when my chance is less than 80% cause the casualties are too high.
The lesser squads aren't cannon fodder though, and i give each member atleast 2 medkits to improve their survivability. The real DPS comes from the "veteran" squads.
I have 2 sniper teams, 2 assault team, 2 support team and 2 back up teams. 5 man squad each. But I also have reserves they can be either militia or captured soldiers who I recruited into my army. So overall my army is around 40-60 units. The only times I exceed that number is when I'm training garrison troops or giving them better equipment.
My sniper teams are usually just militia marksmen, sometimes I get lucky and capture those trained marksman or some pozna snipers. Right now I'm trying to get more Federal Infantry, they have good health and if you give them armor and some medkits they're deadly I also have captured FCA units, sometimes they volunteer to join me.
Usually in combat I have my support/rifleman team to get the attention of the enemy, while the sniper team hangs behind the rifleman team, picking off targets making sure they're not in the line of fire of the enemy, and the 2 sometimes 4 assault team going fast or sneaking on the enemy flanks. Sometimes I have to bring in more troops especially if I'm against high level and high health enemies or outnumbered, I had to make sure to split em up.
Enemy AI usually just attack in numbers, I haven't seen them try to flank me, maybe it hasn't been added in the game yet.
Oh yeah, female militia are awesome, they're the bulk of my garrison, although I had to arm them myself which is alright since I have a lot of M-14's in my inventory.
I agree, patience is the key, but if you have Shock-troopers or any unit with high Health and can wear the heaviest armor, sure rush but they're not invincible.
Since most troops will get to or close to 100 skill with a weapon type the important stats are sight range and speed.
