Didn't really like this in far cry either.
edit:
@Koren: I'm getting at: AK47 uses 7.62x39mm, M14 uses 7.62x51. Two ver different calibers. And M14 should do more Damage per shot, since it has much more muzzle energy. The Damage values seem very, very "gamey", and for no apparent reason.
Getting hit with any cartridge is not a 'shake it off' if not killed outright, you can wound the 'bad guy' and he pops up ready to go again no matter what cartridge used, where IRL a 45% wound means he is not getting up, and motivation is lost.....MEDIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Indeed, I can't wait for some Jagged Alliance veterans to get their hands on the mod tools. They'll have us using HK-G11s in no time and all the guns will get their real names and correct ammunition types.
I suspect what has happened here is that the devs felt that convenience was better than realism, because (as JA vets know) when you go with max realism for ammo types then simply keeping track of all the variety of bullets that your army might need would require a professional accountant. Consider just how many weapons already in this game use (in real life) obscure ammunition - such as the Vintorez. Subsonic 9x39mm? That's not something you're going to find at your local WalMart, that's for certain.
But yeah, seeing the same bullets used in an AK47 as a Mosin Nagant makes me grit my teeth.
Indeed, and even if their body armor stops the bullet entirely they're still going to feel the pain. I'm sure we all remember this scene...
