Can not build a smithy - No nails
I have to build a smithy to get nails. But I have no nails to build a smithy. I also can not build a trading center to buy some nails. So how do I get nails to build a smithy? There have to be a way to complite this quest?

Unfortunately you can't get nails, you'll probably have to start over.

You can tear something down and should get some nails reclaimed.

Yes, this is one of those lessons you learn the hard way when first starting the game. If you have no nails to build either the building to make nails or to import them, game over... Have to react a bit more quickly to the initial 'tutorial' messages.

Smithy should be built shortly after the 9 houses.

Remember you can drag and drop the icons for buildings you have queued up (top right of the screen) to reorganize the build order, or pause construction of queued buildings, if you find you need something built before other things.

That's a good tip!

I realize this is a year late, but if you are reading this like I was and wondering about the nails... your starter camp has 1,000 iron. That, with a charcoal pile and a smithy will build you plenty more starter nails.

But yes, the smithy, you can't build that without nails. It doesn't need a lot, so tear down something to get the nails and then get the smithy going. With the starter iron, you should have enough to build the trading center and go from there.

good beginners build order, in exact order> lumber, clay, 9 houses, place coal burners while houses are being built, thatch, smithy, carpenter, 3 more houses, 2 granaries and some markets, trading post, set export to 20k coal, import iron and leather asap, and cloth, linen and warm clothes soonish, build some storage, shoemaker and clothes maker, get shoes up and running asap and start exporting that as well as the coal. make sure you have shoes, clothes and warm clothes up by end of year 3 and being sold at a stall, or people will start leaving. doing it this way will give you a strong start with export income very early before you've got the city building up to sort taxes.

Pretty much what I do except I place the thatch after the lumber, include the farm and two fields (gives the women something to do).
