They are made by the weaver's workshop.

It's a pretty new item, yes, and was until recently only used for making fishing nets (also pretty new).

Now also shoemakers and tailors need them, which is a brand new thing :lunar2019smilingpig:
On top of what Bjørn said above, they are made from Flax and hemp
Yep I just had to go a whole year without any shoes or fishing, because my farms were not growing hemp or flax. Ended up importing it.

The joys of Early Access games and constant improvements.

Yes, I just came to think about that I usually import leather to make shoes very early in the game, for some early quick profit. Now that we need threads, we also need a farm, a year to grow things and a weaver's shop for threads to make the first shoes. And clothes.

I usually build the first farm before the 9 houses, though, so now there is a good reason to keep doing that.
I always forget about boots until a house pops up a warning that they needs shoes and by that time there's no way for me yo get leather, and farm flax or hemp and usually lose a couple family's before I can do it in village or find a trading partner to sell them to us

If the weaver is built soon enough buy hemp from the trader to get a jump on threads.

I now buy textile from the trader, I need the flax/hemp for threads.

With regards to fishnets build a dock as soon as you can, put in one worker and start making nets. You don't need boats as all your doing is making nets.

Merefa is offering cheap hemp, so farm is not mandatory 😉

IMHO the issue now is the rate of production of threads. The weavers workshop is a bit slow to be honest. I now have three of these to be able to satisfy all the thread demansa in my 1100 pop. village. I'm seriously considering building a fourth which does not look balanced.

I find thread production slow in a non migration game with a population of 35, I can't imagine how bad it is in higher pop games

I've just gone past 1100 pop and am constatly having to manually micro manage thread output to my fishing shacks so there is enough thread to make nets. Just another interesting challenge.

I have 2 weaver workshops in about 500 citizens village, one of each producing only threads. Works fine for 1 tailor, 1 shoemaker and 3 fishing docks, so I can't complain. I find the threads mechanic very interesting.

I usually set up 3 Charcoal Piles and a trading post right after the basics. While not every trader asks for it you're still able to sell vast quantities of charcoal for decent profits early on.
Best of it being that you can utilize the huge amounts of firewood that you can't fully utilize at early stages with low population. Can only suggest adding a cart shed early on to have some hauler bois help supplying the charcoal piles.
Can easily sell like 10k charcoal per year. Even had years where i could fully stock the trading post with 25k Charcoal and just shovel it all off for some income.
Next to no investment other than building a bunch of Charcoal Piles and a Cartshed but easy profit. Perfect solution to overcome any balance deficits until other trades can be set up.

Thank you. Trading charcoal in the beginning is a good tip  As the town grows and I have enough of other things to sell I drop the charcoal, though. The price was reduced quite much a while ago. But almost a must for some early quick "free" money :lunar2019smilingpig:
