Because in those old days, roads in villages were not built, and people themselves trampled the roads.
I own both, I have under 100 hours on ML and over 1000 hours on ostriv. nuff said.
Ostriv on the other hand. No fighting. Building 1700's town. Much more immersive, for me. The Dev, does respond to messages, bith directly and with updates and hotfixes. And in spite of everything he retains a sense of humour. A true Early Access game, constantly improving.
So I think you can see that my choice is Ostriv!
I haven't tried the combat in ML yet, as I usually have no interest in that if it's optional, so I can't say anything about how that works.
On the other side Ostriv is a niche game with a very slow development (yes very slow even bevor the war).
From the pure gamer perspective Manor Lords is the better choice.
I know there are a lot fans from Ostriv who would say "no!" how can you even think something like that and Ostriv is much better ...
But Manor Lords have on daily average more players then the peak number of Ostriv, so where do you think is more money and who will have a more polished game at the end.
And Ostriv is a peaceful game, without a stupid war.
If you are looking for a city building game, I'd say Ostriv, as it's the No. 1 on the market.
Even though it's still Early Access, it's by far more fleshed out than most other city building games and there is no other game that can beat Ostriv in terms of depth and attention to detail.
If you are looking for a game that has combat and you have to choose between Ostriv and Manor Lords, then you would probably pick Manor Lords, as Ostriv is a peaceful city building game, that has no combat.
On the other hand, in that case you would probably be better off with a real strategy game, than a hybrid between strategy and city building like Manor Lords.
The biggest difference between Ostriv and Manor Lords is that Manor Lords as a non-indie game has a publisher on their side (Hooded Horse) that knows very well how to do proper marketing.
Besides Ostriv, I also played Manor Lords and imo Manor Lords doesn't live up to the hype.
Good marketing says nothing about the quality of a game.
The only good thing people say about Manor Lords is that it looks good and yes, I agree, it's a pretty game. But that's it.
To be fair, Ostriv is also a pretty game with it's unique looking grafics. Unlike Manor Lords, which was created on the Unreal Engine, Ostriv doesn't use any third-party engines, so everything is hand-crafted.
As for the updates and patches, despite the fact that Manor Lords has a dev team, the development is really slow and updates bring only little content and fixes.
Ostriv's development is also slow, but it's done by a solo-developer. However, updates bring in content that a lot of work has gone into.
With that being said, it doesn't mean that you shouldn't buy Manor Lords.
If you are interested in Manor Lords and you have the money, you may want to buy it as well.
But if you are looking for a city builder, there are many points that speak for Ostriv.
Hate to say it, but Ostriv is currently better. ML being incomplete and buggy is hard to match against Ostriv.
Both games are made by small teams or a single developer. ML tried to combine city building and conbat. Ostriv is "just" city building. As my preference is city building and to establish a strong economy my favourite is Ostriv.
I also played ML a lot (approx 260h), but after having purchased Ostriv I just follow what's going on with ML. As long as it doesn't get more content and larger updates I keep playing Ostriv.
