'Catching' a dead mouse?

I'm stuck trying to make the cat food. I picked up the paper that puts the other option on, but the mouse is still very much alive. I hope this isn't a bug!

Find the Author at the consruction site next to the bus stop and talk to him until he goes to the school. Go to the school, read the label in your inventory (if you don't have the label go to the Author's room and take it). The mouse will die.
