And yes, the poison damage doesn't scale.
The lance is a weapon that ends up being too weak for end game creatures. I stopped using it. Other weapons outdamage it in base damage and the poison doesn't scale.
And even before the quality levels were added, it's base damage was so low compared to end game weapons like the telson hammer, and the aetherian hammer & 2-handed swords, that there was literally just something I stopped bothering to use.
I think they need to add a whole new recipe. Something we make using snake fangs or something.
I may wrong, but my understanding is that higher poison value in the weapon just means it will fill more of the 'Poisoned' status meter with each hit, meaning less hits are required before the DOT is 'Poisoned' status is reached and the DOT effect applied.
Yes, that was my understanding too.
But in practice, that seems to have no real effect on the poison damage.
One of my favorite mounts is the scorpion, and with that mount's tail attack I can actually stack poison. After numerous repeated hits, I can see the actual amount of poison damage going up with each tick. It wears off very quickly though, so as soon as I stop applying more hits it begins to notch down and return to the normal damage.
I've never seen the 3 pronged poison spear/lance ever do that. The poison damage is always fixed.
I have found it is also possible to stack the poison meter with just pincer attacks, but the tails attacks deliver a much more potent poison attack and therefore stack faster. I don't know if the actual poison damage from the DOT is influenced.
