You now start on the surface, far away from the burrow. There's a wounded soldier, who explains the basics of combat and gets you pointed where you need to go. Different signs along the way teach you more.
This is how it is now. It's normal for a new map.
I personally don't understand why they did this. The new start is MUCH harder then the old one. I guess people complained that the old one kept you on rails for a long time. But it eased you into the threat. In the old setup, you zig zagged down the hill, and eventually reached the river. There were small black ants there which were easy to kill. It got harder from there.
You may find it useful to try this version with a fresh start.
By the time you reached the river across from the giant owl statue, you ran into the first hostile enemies (black ants). As soon as you went across the river you ran into more dangerous stuff, like the night grasshoppers and the bull ants. OOooooh boy, the bullet ants were a pain until I figured out how to fight them.
The new experience just dumps you out in the wilderness with no explanation. How did your character get there? why? no explanation. It was just odd.
I didn't see anything wrong with the old start, but I think the devs made changes in response to the complaints of some of the playerbase.
Having played the initial version of the new start location as well as the more recent Beta Test, I disagree that it just dumps you in the wilderness with no explanation, The first quest is available from the very first NPC, who is 20 feet away when you join, and the journey to Captain Herne is easy to follow, with owl effigies to provide background information along the way.
In my opinion, they are making a good attempt to make it as accessible as possible for new players. As to the necessity of it, I'm happy with either, but if it makes if better for more players, then I'm all for whatever changes they want to make.
