Well, that's wrong. Sorry, but it's wrong.
Like many games nowadays, having open public servers is just an invitation to griefers to show up and wreck everything. People have to be careful about that kind of thing, and have every right to keep private servers. Sorry if you got upset getting booted off somebody's server ( I detect a whiff of butt hurtness there). Unless they were advertising open access, it's like you walked through the front door of someone's home.
And the game was never advertised as an MMO, or large style server (like ark, conan exiles, etc,).
There have been numerous posts regarding this very issue. Players returning to their base to find heaps of resources stolen and structures destroyed. Its the primary reason I have not even looked at the multiplayer aspect of the game.
The devs have made some changes to mitigate the impact, in the base game, but I suspect they are reserving their major effort for the tools they include in the dedicated servers, which will hopefully be available soon.
Sorry I meant there 'no open to play with others community' its like everyone is very shy, Im just saying if you just got the game and you think youre gonna be able to play with a couple other people that also got the game online , this is not going to happen.
Im thinking its a very personal game that only a couple friends that already know eachother from outside will play for a bit.
Of course I got butthurt, Im just a person that was trying to connect with others, I see 20 private locked servers and only three open servers and they 'kick you' out , its like what the heck dude why do you have an open server then.
Also it never crossed my mind that players being trolls and just bad people causing havoc in a little videogame world would be a thing, Im sorry this is happening. Its not an excuse though , now with this new information you sharing the reality is that theres 20-30 Closed private servers, and about 5 open servers that are just open by mistake and add to that theres super toxic people causing havoc in public servers?
This game has great positives and Im only commenting on the multiplayer aspect, I feel its my duty to share in case theres someone that expects things like me.
In GTA5, griefers would join servers, give loads of cash and items (that they'd obtained from cheating) to players, which would get them banned for cheating.
That is open server gaming, and it's been a thing since the start of online multiplayer games. There's always someone who gets off on ruining it for everyone else.
Always.
It's not an excuse. It's a good reason.
That is exactly how I read it too. Your title makes it sound like the devs are lying, and they aren't. Multiplayer in this game works like many others popular games, like valheim. Self hosted worlds, that approximately 10 players can join. And yes, 99% of them are private.
Have you looked online for any advertisements for open servers? or were you just trying to walk into anything you found in the listings? Once again, it's like trying to walk into someone's home. Just because the front door isn't locked doesn't mean you can just go in unannounced.
Organized server hosts usually have ads, and they also have an application process of a sorts. They don't just let randoms join. They'll start with checking to see if you have valve bans in your history, and probably check your other games. If you play nothing but dayz and rust, uhm... hate to judge a leopard by it's spots, but there's a GOOD chance that the player likes PVP, raiding, and looting other people's hard work. Not a good fit for this game.
My guess is that the lack of dedicated servers is costing the game an incredible amount of active players. With the release (even as an early access game) nowadays there should always be more than just the peer-to-peer multiplayer possibility. Simply to ensure as a developer (and business owner) permanent game activity with his product.
I'd like to argue against the fact that there should be more than ANYTHING in games these days. Dedicated servers cost money, and not just a little bit of pocket change, especially if you're planning on dealing with more than a couple dozen players.
Peer-to-peer connection co-op/MP games are just fine as they are, and I highly doubt the lack of dedicated servers has cost this game anything more than a handful of players. Keep in mind that not every game dev company has the funds of AAA sources such as Blizzard, Microsoft, etc.
As far as making sure that 'one person' is on when you want to play, that's hardly a concern in the large-scale of things. Either have your most active person be the host, or expect that you'll maybe want to run some solo stuff (Or switch off hosts) every now and again to keep that ball rolling.
Once you've gotten some gear and experience in the game things become quite a bit easier, and repeating the early-game quests honestly isn't that difficult.
Never played the rust? You don't want open servers with hackers from communist regimes ruining games.
