ladybugs unexpectedly untame themselves
So my friend kept having this issue where his ladybug becomes untamed randomly, until recently i havent had this issue; but mine untamed its self today and im not sure why. When this happens you lose all of the inventory you had on the ladybug, its not very productive...

Does anyone know a reason this would happen?

They aren't 'untaming'. They are probably drowning or being killed by other insects.
The devs will hopefully come up with changes to pets that makes them less vulnerable.

how do you even tame stuff?

There will be recipes in the various cooking workstations. Just make the recipe, then damage a creature of the appropriate type to less than 50% health, then the option to tame will come up when they are in range. Hit F to tame.
Some recipes won't be available until given as a reward for completing a quest.

I do as follows: "park" the ladybug at home and go collect resources, kill monsters. As soon as my inventory is full, I find a safe place and use the "whistle". The ladybug is ported to me, I unload into his inventory and "park" the ladybug again. When I return home, I use the "whistle" again and the ladybug is next to me again.

Can you perhaps give more details of this "becomes untamed" behavior? Are you actually seeing the tame suddenly quit and go back to it's other ladybug friends or did you just simply notice your ladybug was missing and/or got a display message saying your tame was released?

the later is correct, got the message it was released and that was the same thing my friend kept telling me was happening to him about 4 different occasions, because it was not happening to me at first i was starting to think maybe he was accidentally releasing it,
my first lady bug lasted at least 5 sessions of playing before it happened to me.

I've lost several ladybugs to water. If the ladybug is set to follow and you cross water the ladybug will try to follow and will often die. Ladybugs are also very weak so unless peaceful mode is on so the earlier posts about parking are good advice.

Okay, that means your bugs died trying to follow you.

All hostile creatures will attack your tames, and your tames can drown. You have to plan your journey very carefully if you want them to follow and keep them out of harms way, or don't bring them, and use the whistle only when you want to make deposit and then put them in a safe spot and leave them again....repeat as needed.

My buddy and i have only played on a passive server so any fight with a creature we have we have to initiate it, ive been next to him when he said his ladybug got released twice and there wasnt any fighting we were doing at the time. And my lady bug got released shortly after I killed a beetle I started to continue to explore then it released its self.

I cant say ive watched its pathing after crossing water, but i dont think ladybugs can drown in water, the first ladybug i had i ran just about everywhere on the whole map with it and its never had any issue crossing water, sometimes it doesnt catch up with me or gets stuck somewhere but i just blow my whistle and shortly after it will spawn on me.

They do drown in water, had it happen once, when tames follow you, they don't necessarily take the same path as you do.

There needs to be an option to make them non-killable or at least have them drop with grave on death like the player.

As it is now its very frustrating and buggy to use them to carry stuff.

Options like you suggest will hopefully be a part of that. Likewise, no friendly fire against pets. The roadmap indicates some love for the pets, so I'm content to wait and see what they come up with. There is plenty of people advocating for improvement, so I'm sure they'll do their best to find the right balance and provide good settings options. It just takes time to design, build and test.
