As previously stated by
So you can see this when they are not in your party. There is a number next to their name like 14, or 33, or whatever. Combined, you cannot "Join Party" in excess of 100.
However..
At the time of this post, if you have 4 companions, and level them up beyond the 100 point limit, then you can have a party in excess of the 100 points limit. However, if they leave your party, then you might not be able to invite them back (if they leveled up and are now higher than 100 limit points).
Here's an example;
I have some bees. Each bee uses 24 companion points to join. So, I have a 4-bee party, totaling 96 points. I cannot recruit a 5th companion, since the limit is 4 at a time.
I go adventuring, and my bees level up! Hooray! But, I want to move this other companion that is not in my party.. so I remove 1 bee from my party, and I move a grasshopper worth 14 points to a new spot. I remove the grasshopper from party and go back to my bee.
Except.. the bee leveled up since it was originally in my party. Now it costs 26 per bee to join, and my current 3-bees total 78 companion points (26 each). I can no longer add the 4th bee, since it costs 26 companion points but I only have 22 available (100-78=22).
Unsolicited tip: a 'full' party isn't always the best. You might be using a lot of revive sticks if you try to squeeze in some weaker companion just to fill as many points as possible. I find having a couple solid super companions is better than having a couple super companions plus two lowbie companions. The lowbies get smoked almost instantly in any fight. Just not worth it.
Hope it helps! Cheers
