I don't care that it's "cheating" if I am using it to overcome a bug...
It's just useful to have in a game like this in general. Even if it's locked behind a server function so only an admin can use it, or if you're playing offline it's available. I eventually managed to get my stuff back, but it was a very tedious game of putting a bed spawn nearby and just falling down the cliff side until I could stop in that spot lol
Usually that's how it works. In the event of a falling death *river/heights) your grave is spawned where you last had stable footing. My issue was caused by my character gaining footing while falling against a cliff face. However it looks like there are some bugs with placement, I just haven't experienced them yet
Were you using winged armour? It's impossible to take fall damage because if you run out of stamina because you can just slowly descend to the ground. Did you lower fall damage as low as it will go, because 50% damage at least gives you a better chance of survival if you somehow end up falling.
One good tip is to manually save your game in the game menu and then drag the saved games folder to a backup somewhere. If disaster strikes, just restore from backup.
If you're really quick with ESC and clicking Quit you can often save your character by exiting to the main menu, quitting and then going back into your world. This puts you back beside your spawn bed with all your stuff... if you're quick. 😉
That said I have read two or three times in here that people happened across their lost gravestone at the very first place you spawn when you make a new character. The one where you see a couple of guards when you head out for the very first time. Have a look and see if that's the case.
It may be a bit late now, but if the same occurs again in the future, I recommend looking for the gravestone in the branches of the trees at the location marked on the map. That's where I found mine. It took a delicate touch to retrieve it, in my case, but I reckon some caught in branches will simply be too hard to retrieve.
Having said that, they seem to disappear after a time and then you can find them near where your character starts, just outside the Burrow.
Your grave marker will eventually be moved all the way back to opening of the underground smallfolk city. Right where you started the game the first time.
There's also options for the future, of turning off drop on death. So you won't have any grave marker ever again. You will respawn with all your items. I've had that feature turned on since it was added, just because of issues like what you're experiencing now.
