You misunderstood.
You can bring your entire base from one tree to another. Like if you wanted to move from the north side of the map to the south. You walk to the other tree and talk to the gnome and you can teleport your entire base to that tree instead. You can only have one tree claimed.
Though i could have sworn i read something along the lines of "you can teleport between trees once you claim them."
Ah well.
No fast travel. Use a mount, but bear in mind friendly fire kills them and this includes you accidentally hitting them. Another consideration is that the stamina of mounts vanishes extremely fast, so they're more of a liability than a help a lot of the time.
Winged armour and Grappling Hook are other options, but they also burn your stamina fast and it can be easy to kill yourself with a mistake!
If you want to be really cheap, logging out and logging back in returns you to your spawn point. Which if it happens to be on the top of a great tree makes it pretty quick to get about anywhere.
Actually you can fast travel, but it's not a "legitimate" method, it's an exploit of a badly designed game mechanic.
Basically you have to choose where you may want to fast travel to. (You can only pick one location at a time.) And build a bed there and select it as a respawn point. Whenever you want to fast travel to that location from somewhere else, just exit to the main menu, the load back into the game. You will now be wherever that bed was placed and activated at. The game is badly designed in that it does not save your position when you log out, (Unlike every other survive game on the entire planet earth does.) so it always reverts to placing you where your respawn is.
