Based upon your notes, I am unsure whether you have opened the Walnut Chest, near the Elder. If you haven't you need to kill the King Stag Beetle, found underground near the broken bridge leading to the cathedral, and use the loot to open the walnut chest.
Take the contents of the chest to the Elder and follow the instructions.
Good luck, have fun.
Take the half scroll to the Historian and follow his instructions.
Have fun
So, to solve the problem with the hawk who always kills when you cross some border line, you should use the caves. There is a small and quite unconspicious door (if you don't know where to look for it) under the broken bridge which is near the unrevealed (hidden) nothern part of the map (I guess, it's the bridge over the river you can't cross due to the hawk atacks). This door leads to the cave system and if you enter it, eventually, you will find the way out on the other side .
But I strongly recommend to put on your best armor and take your best weapon, also, take as many healing potions/bandages and other means as you can carry, because eventually, you will face a hostile tribe with quite powerful warriors . They'll be real pain in the a*se if you come unprepared.
And, as a bonus to my other tips, I can tell, that you'll be able to tame there one of the best mounts — a bird (a titmouse or a finch, I think) . But it's not an easy task. I won't reveal more details, as I have already told much more than I intended.
Good luck!
When I got to the historian, I didn't have the half scroll in my inventory, so the quest didn't continue.
Thank you both for introducing great tips.
