Dedicated Server: Connection timed out

I used the Steam tool Smalland Dedicated Server to set up a dedicated server for my friends and me. I opened port 7777 as shown on the start-server.bat file. Then tried to connect. Connection timed out.
I tried opening 25565, the minecraft default port since I know that port forward works. Connection timed out.
Now I'm googling how to fix it, and I'm noticing a complete lack of info. Has anyone successfully created their own dedicated server (not bought a hosting service)?

I use Opnsense for my router and run a server on Ubuntu in an LXC on Proxmox.
