Building a large base or not
Is there any reason to make large bases in our home tree, or is it all just purely cosmetic preference?

I guess I am wondering if there should be any "strategic" considerations when designing the layout of the base.

I am having a blast with the materials I am able to get so far, but haven't yet played new content and haven't unlocked any metal or anything yet, but can't wait to see what I can do with that stuff. =)

Here's a bit of what my tree currently looks like...

If I am going to have my own "kingdom", it starts with the entrance, so this is the Gateway I built as the start of my domain.

I ended up building one single huge building in the center of my tree, because i'd heard reports of people losing parts when they moved trees. Apparently they built too far out on the branches. Some of those early reports were probably also people who built indoor items without a roof over it, and they just deteriorated from weather. But the reports were enough to make me build realllllllly conservatively.

if there was some clear indication of where the buildable area ended, I'd have made a circle of smaller buildings, with different purposes (smithy, barn, etc). Like a small village, like you're describing.

I really wish there were indicators of how far out and up you could build.

As this game in it's current state can be accomplished via single player mode rather easily, the need for a massive base really isn't required. Myself personally I like to keep it fairly simple and convenient without having to run around like a chicken with my head cut off.

I have a 2 storey 9 x 6 base, bottom floor has all the work benches, top floor has all my chests and bed. Still have some space for additional building if need be on the great tree main area without going into the branches.

I build a mid-sized building on the tree, just for travelling to other spots on the map when gathering resources but have a couple of ground bases too.

I built a giant tower that goes as far up as it can so that I could create a 5 catapult platform on the top. At the top ensures not hitting anything above and gets your more distance. I literally can reach any where on the map from the platform.

There is what appears to be an invisible Great Tree Base Boundary. This boundary is what gets moved with the base when switch bases. The only way you can find that boundary is by trying to build through it. It will display a RED message stating "All parts must be in the same area". The top boundary is pretty high up towards the top of the tree branches. I found it twice towards the top and it does appear to be at two different height levels, so it might be spherical.

I have't tried going out further on branches horizontally to test it or seeing if you can go below the initial top area. But it would be a simply place a foundation somewhere, move the tree and see if that foundation went with you. If it did, you can build there until you reason that "All parts must be in the same area" boundary.

From what I can tell, all creatures are stuck to their spawn area and there is no tower defense mechanic as of yet....so there is no reason to build a defensive base....or at least yet. There is that whole idea of PVP, but who knows how thats going to go and is that going to be any fun other player can destroy your base.

Some pics of my build.

To get an idea of some examples of that "All parts must be in the same area", here is the link to the bug post on it.

So many really clever and esthetic builds.
The catapult tower is a great idea.

That sounds awesome!!! You doing that on the tree or on the ground somewhere? That mansion is deceptively quite large.

In the Darkness Falls mod for 7DTD, Khaine had the Spencer Mansion in the Radiation zone and wow that was impressive. I did a mission there and spent almost 2 days in the mansion before I was completely full on loot ( filling a black hawk as well ) and looming on horde night before I decided to pull out and didn't even fully explore half of it.

Im excited for you and can't wait to see pics

In the tree. It's quite fun though I half think I was crazy to attempt it lol.
Don't have too much yet but will have to get some pics.

I found this online & was using it to guesstimate proportions with 4 squares being one block of foundation or flooring.

I used the foundation at its highest point so could swap some pieces of flooring to make a basement.

The main staircase is frustrating me a bit as trying to add the second ones from the landing aren't lining up right and it keeps having stairs below the landing 🤪

Took a bit of a break to level some of my dinos on Path of Titans but am wanting to get back to my building a bit too 😁

Wish we had more deco stuff to put in rooms though I think I have a pretty good start to main hall & dining room.

I seem to have lost part of my save for the RE HD remaster on steam but I can see parts of the mansion as well as using a half life 2 Mod that is a mansion tour.

By the does anyone know if it is possible to have a wood wall on a stone one without them combining together?
I was using stone and I DO like how it looks inside but I think if it showed wood outside it might look more accurate.

I think I get what your saying, you want the wood to only show on the outside and the stone
to only show on the inside. If you combine them in the same space...then no. Its a mesh.

Your best best to place your stone and then on the outside, turn off the snap to, then try to place the first piece of wood panel as close to it as possible and still get the look your going for. Once placed, turn your snap to back on so that you can more easily snap to your wooden wall rather than manually try to place them. The no snap to is still pretty weird, as it won't line up to get close enough to other things in...at least in most of my situations Im thinking of. So once you get your first piece set, the snap to should line them up correctly.

This could be tricky. If the basement is only a foundation deep...meaning you take a foundation, raise it as high as it goes, place some floor boards on it and try to walk underneath, the camera angles are going to be real tight....especially in those underground hallways. If you make them standard 2 wall high, the your floors above may have challenges with height, especially with the foyer and dining room with those vaulted ceilings. You might be able to cheat and make one of those wall 3/4 high. It gets some a little more height while being able to support the roof.

You may need to remove the higher stair case, make your lower staircase from the floor board, you may need to turn snap to off, set it, and then reset your higher staircase. There might be some overlap, but its not terrible. You can also angle a floorboard to set with your stairs so you don't see through.

Hmmmm interesting points will have to see if can try any of the listed suggestions.

And also need to try and get some screenshots of what I do have.

Just upload your pics on Steam from your Game Library. They're on the right panel. You may have to scroll down some, but your pics should be there if you've used the F12 key (default) to take in-game pics.

Once uploaded, just click on your pic,
then on the right, click View Comment & Details.
Once there, just right-click, and choose Copy Page URL.
Then paste it in your post, and you'll get this:

I hate having to go online just to look at a pic, but that's just me.

I didn't use steam to take the pictures though but the NVIDIA graphics card

Regarding posting pics. The following advice was posted in the Skyrim forum by Steam user cfs111.

How do you post a screenshot?
Steam can sometimes get wonky. Try the following.
- Go to you Screenshots gallery.
- Open picture you want to share.
- The same window has link above it. (Left upper corner.) Click it. It will open the comments view.
- Copy the link to that view from either link, or under SHARE-button included.

Hope it helps.
