Just so I'm not misleading anyone, I ended up setting the game to Peacefui mode, because I was struggling.
Some potentially helpful tips:
Place and activate beds to save progress.
Once you have placed and activated a bed, you can log out and start a new server to take you back to your base to restock and repair, then log out and back to the original server and pick up where you left off on your quest.
Just an option.
Yeah, this is good advice.
When you come down the staircase from the rear of the church, the historians base is literally directly in front of you... just across some water, and up high. There's usually a pack of grey flies hovering over the water. You'll only recognize it's his base when you finally reach it and get a better look at it.
The normal route to get to historian is indeed, a pain. You run up some boards, and then run around the outside of the whole room on ledges. I kind of expected some kind of path/short to unlock once I reached the historian, but there was nothing. Might want to build your own.
As a side note, when I tried to start building from the historian's lair downwards, I found his whole base is a no build zone. I couldn't start building from there. Next trip, I will start lower and build up.
I'm not sure if this is what the elder was speaking of, but I did find an alternate path that goes along the back side of the ruins, literally on the side of the cliffs. It takes you to a tunnel entrance going into the the underground ruins and practically straight to the historian.

You know that area which the big giant full size wooden door on the opposite side of where the king stag is....all the way in the back is the stone railing pillars and then the endless water/lake/sea.....so if from the door, follow along the way till you get to the pillar/railing/cliffs....right around that corner there is one piece that you have to get up. Either get lucky with the jumping, grapple shots, or build some stairs. Only need like a single foundation placement to climb up and jump or you can get fancy put stairs. The rest is an easy path going to a tunnel. Once inside, be aware, there are critters. the first fork, if you take a right, will lead you to a colony spider spawn area for endless amount of fun. going left ( or straight ish ) at the fork instead, will lead you to an open area with flies and a stag beetle. Its harder to explain from here, going straight you'll see a hole in the wall that leads to a pool of water with a board in the middle. Its possible to build some stairs up and jump/glide the rest of the way to him. If not then back at that area with the stag beetle...taking a right will lead you to a roach, more flies and a ramp up....this is the long way natural path to the historian. Under/behind a ramp is a tunnel that leads to those colony spiders that spawn, going the opposite direction of that will be the front viewing area of the historian....and the front of that pool.
The good news is once you reach him , you can make Hornet Treats and ride them to him and to the merchant. Just as you farm the ingredients its constant respawn so lure them up the board and kill. (or get zerged)
My favorite way now is to use the catapult from my normal Ruins Island base, launch myself way into the air and then glide all the way to the Historian. Only have to worry about the house flies that follow you once you land.
You know that would probably make me pass out IRL. LOL. I can see how the catapult would be fun, especially the little kid in me can see it. The grown up me just says...........Nope.
