try it out - i like it. but there´s no essential reason for doing this to complete the game.
That said, because a few days ago tree bases could be damaged by other players even though set to Private, I only have a small 3x3 shack on my tree. I didn't want my ground base coming with me. As of the patch, this bug has been fixed. Like you, the balloon travel became irksome to me as well so I actually prefer my base on the ground as my main base. I'd rather the gnome just teleported me up or down as required, to be honest.
If I ever play a bit of multiplayer, at least I have basic facilities that will travel across with me.
That being said we do both on our CoOp game. We build in the encampment and we build cool forward bases in different places with all the crafting stations etc. You can build anywhere. Take your time and build cool stuff all over,.
I think most points have been shared already as to why it's a good thing, what it offers and so on. My partner and I have used it in particular to have a shared base and to bring that to other servers.
I think there's a few more bits and pieces around great trees that's good to know, this guide covers most if not all if you want to dig into it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEOHyzjaUks
To claim your first tree, you do need to climb all the way to the top and talk to the wooden gnome up there.
To claim a new tree (after your first one)/ to move your camp, you only need to climb like 20% up to the platform where there is a gnome / the airlift platform. After you claim it, talk to the wooden gnome again and ask him to call down the air lift. The air lift will float down to that platform. You can also access tree bases set to Public this way, I believe, in multiplayer.
This.
I surprised only the last two who commented read it as "I've been platform jumping up and down every time" or "I didn't talk to the gnome/tree butler".
And tames can follow you onto the balloon platform and travel up and down with you.
I summon my tree base to where I am mainly if I need to make new items, cook food, make potions, etc. Then it's handy to have it all in one place.
And I agree the balloon ride gets a little tiring after a while. The first 100 times I went up and down it was "this is coooooool". It kind of wore off after a while.
Now I build 2X3 mini huts at the base of some big trees I go to a lot. Rather then make the trip up the tree over and over, I dump mats into chests and leave it to pile up. When I get a lot, then I haul up full stacks.
I made an alt character, with a complete set of duplicate gear just for using on multiplayer. That alt has NO treebase whatsoever. Before they fixed the bug that let people grief the bases, I was going to build a 1X1 shack with 1 chest inside of it. And then place just 1 fiber in it. Still plan to do that, just to see who comes sniffing around my base in multiplayer.
I did claim... but the Ladybug decided to ditch me before reaching the balloon.
Also the balloon is extremely bothersome when you die on your way to get your tombstone. Running down after a death... total killjoy.
You should never have to run up or down unless you want to.
Just whistle for the ladybug, although if you ride the balloon up it will appear next to you up there anyway..
Why are you running down the tree after a death? As OGPB says, talk to the statue on the platform and just tell it to call the balloon.
Yes, aware of that. But someone going up to a base might not have heard they patched it yet.
Also it speaks to intent.
It's like a complete stranger walking up to a house, and instead of knocking, they instantly try to see if they can open the door. Turn the doorknob and walk right in. The door is locked, so they start to head around to try the rear door...
That kind of announces their intentions.
