You click on the bed you want to be your spawn point. I usually pop one down before i do something dangerous and set my respawn to it so i don't have to run as far if i die.
When your done you can just destroy it. Or leave it and just change your respawn back to your base the next time you go there.
That might be because their previous location of their tree base was filled with someone else's treebase. If it's full, their treebase was never spawned in. Meaning it might switch back to their base built on the ground.
There can also be issues with desync with other players on the server. The host won't have any issues, but all other players in multiplayer can have issues. So it might not be registering the switching of spawn spots.
