Smalland: Survive the Wilds

Vanguard?
Not a biggy, not a rant, just some thought that went trough my mind and maybe someone can fill in the gap or the thing I missed:

It seems you start of as a vanguard of the king and or queen who is send off to the upper world to look for a cure.
Vanguards are, for as far as my knowledge goes, pretty much the "elite" protectors of leaders in battles and pretty important.

Isn't it a little strange that you are being send into an unknown world full of dangers (well, unknown to you since suddenly there are NPC's that have complete buildings in a world "we" haven't vetured for millenia according to the intro) without ANYTHING at all? No knife, no little piece of food, no knowledge AT ALL?

I strikes me a little bit as:
"We made a survival game, but everyone is using/wants a story so let's slap one into it without any after-thought".

Not meant to talk down at anyone at all especially the devs, for the game looks great and the future looks bright (except when it is autumn, then it looks grey :P).

I was just wondering how this could be fitted into this story, maybe see it as feedback or some thoughtfood. (As long as you see it in a positive way)

Cheers.

From Merriam-Webster Dictionary
[ Vanguard -
1 : the forefront of an action or movement
2 : the troops moving at the head of an army ]

The vanguard is the leading element of the army. The title 'Vanguard' as used in the game, seems perfectly reasonable given the task the character is required to undertake. The Smallfolk are just beginning their return back to the surface after all the time they hid underground.
I'm sure numerous military leaders have regarded the vanguard as one of the most disposable elements of their army. Like skirmishers.

Cheers for that.
I saw the vanguard as something more that just disposable since they're the "leading" part going first, venture, explore and so on, but this might be interpretation (no idea if I spelled that correct). (The trendsetters)

But then again: send into unknown, dangerous lands without anything at all seems a bit strange, even IF they think of "you" as disposable: at least give them a club.

I mean; everyone salutes you when you are leaving the "palace(?) so you aren't just some nobody I guess?

Not saying something needs to be changed and the lore will probably be finetuned as we all go I guess.

One of the NPCs literally tells you that they're a group that went out ahead. So obviously some people have been out on the surface for a bit. But it wasn't a big movement.

The big rush of vanguard (including your character) are being sent out because the queen is sick, and someone stole the key to the only known cure. The need warm bodies sent out to scour the land for whoever did it, and get the key back. then they found the key hung around the king stag beetle, so obviously something is major fishy. The key didn't get there on it's own.
