I'll second this experience. Despite grasshoppers having wings in real life (thus setting expectations), there's no "air control" whatsoever... which resulted in me taming a grasshopper, mounting it, excitedly jumping to see how that worked... and both of us immediately perishing in the river.
I haven't bothered taming anything since, because the forums are full of stories about how much the tames are just a good way to lose equipment, die, and/or watch your newly-acquired pet commit suicide by attacking anything and everything that's anywhere near you.
Pretty tough, fun to fly around on and they dont get near water.
Except for the very, very endgame tame.
That thing is a beast, even without levelling it.
Although, it is highly annoying, having to chase it around to interact, or even at the very least, mount it.
Tames still have a loooong way to go.. hopefully devs are capable of making them worthwhile.
I think this is the 3rd(?) "rework" of them, and they are still utter trash.
Anyone tried to fly it to the "main" area of the game? Or will the hawk kill it? The Tit is nice but its so fast that flying it makes it very hard and useless.
Only useful pet is the Hornet.
I've lost three hornets this way.
One thing you can do... and this is probably NOT a good thing to do... is.... right after your pet dies, as it fades to black and you begin to respawn... is open up the task manager on your pc and then find smalland and "end task".
If you do that quick enough before it saves, when the game launches again it will restore from the last snapshot, and the pet will still be alive (usually). As I said, probably not a healthy thing to do, and may possibly lead to file corruption, etc. But I've done this once to save a level 105 hornet. The next time I launched after shutting it down manually like that, I received an entire error message popup. Had to restart a second time, and it was fine after that.
Of course, you could also stop and manually make saves of the entire appdata folder for the game periodically, but you'd have to remember that, and then lose all the progress of an entire play session.
I'm really hoping that when they add the stable building that's on the roadmap, that it allows you to revive pets. Any pets assigned to the stable get life insurance basically.
The bird can cross huge chunks of the river safely, but there are few areas near the outer edges of the map where you get the warning letters about the hawk. I turned right around, so never saw the hawk.
Even when you do get killed by the hawk, it usually doesn't do anything to your tame. I've been snatched off the back of a hornet 3 times (just wanted to see the hawk do it), and the hornet was fine. Used a whistle and summoned it back to the my base.
I agree on hornets. A lot more practical for day to day stuff. The hornet is an attack helicopter, the bird is a fighter jet. Just literally too fast to be useful.
I totally agree on the 'avoid water' part. I have lost so many ladybugs to water because they tried to walk into it on their way to me.. This also leaves some of their graves inaccessible :(
I also never had them walk into Water on their own, only when I steered them into it.
And Grasshopper treats are really easy to make. I just always carry a couple in case one dies so i can grab a new one. Havent gotten beyond that yet but Ill assume that last mount is gonna be dope, though farming for it is an abysmal grind.
Ladybugs though, utterly useless. The extra space is nice in theroy, till you realize almost everything oneshots them and you cant have a ladybug and a mount. So I´d rather be fast than have a couple more unreliable inventory slots.
And as much as I love the Geckos and Wolf Spiders just from an interest in the animals, they are also ♥♥♥♥♥ pets that really dont add any benefit, unless they changed something about them recently that makes them semi usefull. I feel like if one or both of em could just climb straight up vertical cliffs theyd have some use, but even then youre probably still better off with a hornet or even damsel fly.
What I would really like is a "get out of here" command for mounts. Like for the horses in Red Dead Redemption. Just so they buzz off to safety (and kinda just despawn I guess) and dont die because they feel the urge to help me in combat or start scrapping with some random enemy I didnt see.
Also, tamed Hornets REALLY need to stay closer to the ground so its not as big of a hassle to interact with them or mount them
I wish we could steer them by moving the mouse just like in ARK or other games where you can play as animals like The Isle, Beast of Bermuda, Path of Titans ect. Would feel so much more natural imo.
Same for the wings btw they also have tank controls which I find terribly unintuitive but maybe it´s just me.
