The way tames were before, it was clear that they were meant to be catch and release. Like taming one of the mechanial horses in Horizon Zero Dawn. Tame it, ride it, let it go. We weren't supposed to care about them. Do I get emotionally invested in the taxi or uber I took to get somewhere? no.
Have some kind of stable building (which is already announced on the roadmap), and have slots inside for each tame. Anything in a slot can be "de-summoned" and stored in the stable, and revived. Allow you to switch tames by accessing the stable (without the whole "leave party" thing).
I think some kind of cost maybe? either hoots, or maybe something more restrictive, like requiring a boss trophy? Blue hornet wings to revive a hornet, another bird egg to revive your tamed bird?
