Turns a 10 Gauge into a 12 Gauge.
Or... ummm... instead of 5 to 10 Shots', the Grouping is now 6 to 12 Shots'.

In the linked image, let's say the red shots were the original typical grouping experienced by someone shooting some projectile weapon at the target. The green shots demonstrate what a "tighter" shot grouping might look like.
The obvious advantage to the tighter grouping is how the shots are concentrated in a smaller area, and therefore will really destroy said area. Whereas the red grouping is spread out so that no two shots are really going to team up together for more destructive damage.
Also, consider what these groupings would likely look like as the shooter moves farther away from the target. At some point, some of the red shots may actually soar over or around the target. The green ones would be less likely to do so.
Relating this back to the game, this is why people with Nuclear Amplifiers and electric machine guns love running into an enemy with a large electric shield of some sort - they can charge up the amplifier and get their Titan bar completed much faster than someone using a shotgun type weapon, which may do great damage in close when all it's shrapnel is able to hit the target every shot, but if they get too far away, many of the pieces will go above or to the sides of the target, with less pieces actually scoring a hit.
I hope that made sense. :-)
