Map Size is Fake and really just 20x20km
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vljP6-Uabz0

All gameplay videos so far show how you just count ~20cm as 1m distance. Guys come on! What is this? You just faked a factor 5 in.

Example Video:

Fake distance:
at 10min time mark -> 83km covered; gives average speed 500km/h :steamfacepalm:

"should be" distance
real average speed as shown in game ~100km/h; at 10mins ~ 16km covered

You just count ~20cm map size as 1m!? Are you serious?

Now it also makes sense how you did the large maps in Unreal Engine, which is kind of limited to what you see in the Kite Demo. You just did not!
The 12,000km2 you say you have (~110km/110km) are really just ~400km2 (~22kmx22km).

People already notice this from the first gameplay videos on. Do you think this is funny?

Dear All,

The global map size of DAKAR 18 is +18.000km2 in-game, already with the respective reduction from scale!

And therefore, please allow me to clarify a few things.

Peru area is over 1.2M Km2
Bolivia area is over 1M Km2
Argentina Area is over 2.7M Km2

We recreated huge portions of the maps of those 3 countries using a 1:32 scale, based on the actual stage locations. The 18.000Km2 the game currently has ALREADY take into account the reduction of the size to fit in the game.

Take Stage 2, for instance. Roughly 280Km, a relatively small stage comparing with some of the others. https://www.dakar.com/en/rankings/stage-2

The best time for that stage on a car was around 3h (Depres, 2h56'). On my several attempts at it with a car, my best time was 47 minutes. This should give you an overall look at the size and proportions.

With these size reductions in place, aiming to fit the game with the original roadbooks' distances (stages go from around 250km to 750km, except stage 1), the amount shown as traveled in the game is a simulated adjustment. Hence those numbers you got.

Some stages in reality require around 5h of traveling and in the game you'll be able to finish them in roughly 1h30. But finishing times differ a lot, as you can see from the link, mostly due to navigation.

Feel free to ask any questions you might have

the game have in total area, more than 18,000km2 (+7,000 miles2) inside of the game, already reduced from the real areas. The reduction is 1:32 scale from the reality.

Thanks for the details! I guess a game like this attracts a simulation crowd, and they are quite nit-picky, so to say.

One last question to close the loop to my OP:
Are the 18000km2 (eg 133x133km) the kilometer number that is counting on top of the screen as a distance? No, right? The one at the top of the screen is 18000x32 from real world scale, right?

Sorry for the confusion. The speed of 500km/h in the game are somewhat hard to understand :)

No worries!
This is the first Rally Raid game with navigation and "Road Books", so we already expected many doubts, but we are here also to help.

If you check the map of the DAKAR 2018 route, cant be square because if it was, hundreds of unused square Km would be in the ocean.
Please check here:
http://netstorage.lequipe.fr/ASO/motorSports_dak/affiche-parcours-dakar-2018.pdf

For that reason we had to cut in 5 different square maps to cover the land, divided by around 1,125 chunks of 16km2 each (4km x 4km), all connected each other that sums +18,000km2.

Regarding to the speed... that was the best way we get to simulate the kilometers.
Since we wanted to keep also the simulation of the original "Road Books", used in the real race, but the world was reduced by 1:32, we had to compensate with the kilometers passed so the simulation of the Navigation to be possible. Since Navigation is the key simulation in this game.
Please bear in mind the Navigation with Road Book notes are always based on Kilometers and Cap Heading, as defined by FIA rules.

Hopy you guys enjoy the game!

You also cloud have adjusted the distances in the roadbook to match the real distance travelled in-game. The current way is confusing: You hear e.g. "3 km straight next cap 124" and prepare yourself mentally for a few minutes straight ahead. But due to the mismatch of the distance in the roadbook and the distance you actually travel, the turn occurs much earlier then excepted.

Yes, we are also adjusting the moment and the distance that the navigator talk to an acceptable time and to match with the adjusted kilometres (due to the 1:32 scale down), so the player (pilot) can follow the instructions of the navigator.
Please remember that not only our team is testing all the stages, but also many official pilots are testing the game too to make sure the experience is the correct one.

there are multiple maps, the first map Pico is ingame 200*200km, if i calculated it on the car speed kmh, the first map is 35*35km. thats still insane huge. i wil update on the second map. i think im pretty close to the real meters with 1225km² on the pico map. abaut 5,7km on the counter is 1 real km. the third map is big, 2 hours to get to a border.

im between 5,7Gkm and 5,8Gkm for 1 Rkm. at treasure hunt Arequipa i did 496 km to get to the south east corner of the map, 2 hours of extreme horror. thats abaut 87 real km offroad trail. it was exhausting but very beatifull.

You're mistaking. It's taking into account sizes reductions. I just tried to reach the end of map with bike, it took me 1 hour of straight line and just lost all my fuel. Couldn't even figure if there's a end to the map. It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ huge. Only the 10 last minutes of the map started being repetitions, the 50 first minutes were true map playable with roads tracks and stuff. I'm ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ impressed how huge it is
