Then any game can claim something like 10000000km2, right?
The global map size of DAKAR 18 is +18.000km2 in-game, already with the respective reduction from scale!
And therefore, please allow me to clarify a few things.
Peru area is over 1.2M Km2
Bolivia area is over 1M Km2
Argentina Area is over 2.7M Km2
We recreated huge portions of the maps of those 3 countries using a 1:32 scale, based on the actual stage locations. The 18.000Km2 the game currently has ALREADY take into account the reduction of the size to fit in the game.
Take Stage 2, for instance. Roughly 280Km, a relatively small stage comparing with some of the others. https://www.dakar.com/en/rankings/stage-2
The best time for that stage on a car was around 3h (Depres, 2h56'). On my several attempts at it with a car, my best time was 47 minutes. This should give you an overall look at the size and proportions.
With these size reductions in place, aiming to fit the game with the original roadbooks' distances (stages go from around 250km to 750km, except stage 1), the amount shown as traveled in the game is a simulated adjustment. Hence those numbers you got.
Some stages in reality require around 5h of traveling and in the game you'll be able to finish them in roughly 1h30. But finishing times differ a lot, as you can see from the link, mostly due to navigation.
Feel free to ask any questions you might have
The 14 stages scheduled for the event are all present in the game.
The first one you should be able to complete in under 10m. But the other ones go from 45m to around 2 hours. Possibly more, depending on your navigation expertise and vehicle.
Finishing a whole Rally should take you well over 20h for each of the 5 categories. Could be less if you're playing in Rookie mode, with the navigation assists.
Fuel = 14.400 km2
Dakar 18 = +18.000km2
In terms of the map size, however: According to the Rally Dakar homepage, there are "over 4500 km of special" stages in the 2018 edition of the Rally Dakar. Scaled down by 1:32, this means the total length of the stages should be close to 150 ("real") km in the game, shouldn't it?
This would roughly translate to the square root of 18*10^3 km^2, 134 km.
Best,
Brett
Dear All,
Our PR & Community Manager already answered this topic, but we notice that remains some doubts regarding to the map of the game, so we will try to clarify the community.
DAKAR18 is a "Rally Raid". That means it is based on "Navigation" on a FULL OPEN WORLD. It is not comparable as other games based on linear tracks, roads or pre-loaded locations.
We already developed vehicles and tracks for other Rally games (WRC 3 / WRC 5 / MotoGP13) and they are Track based. That means they are linear. You can only race on tracks or small pre-loaded areas. We also love these games (where the gameplay is focused on pure driving inside a track), but please understand that BIGMOON never intended to "copycat" other great games. Why should we? Some of them are already great!
We decided to work on a different genre. A kind of Rally that was NEVER recreated before…. the "Rally Raid" genre, also known as "Cross Country Rally". All Rally Raids are based on freedom to race and to find "WayPoints" using ONLY the Road Books. These category of Rally is what we are working and will keep working in the future. Not better or worst comparing with linear tracks… but a totally different gameplay experience!
DAKAR18 brings a Huge Open World to a Rally game. That means you don't have a specific track / road to follow, you're free to go anywhere... and not only in the "Specials" (stages).
That said, we cant speak as "Km"… but as "Km2", since you can go anywhere, that means you can drive far far way from the location of the waypoints… and get lost.
And yes... the game have in total area, more than 18,000km2 (+7,000 miles2) inside of the game, already reduced from the real areas. The reduction is 1:32 scale from the reality.
BTW: DAKAR18 is based on DAKAR RALLY 2018 edition. "Dakar Rally" is not only a Rally Raid. It's called as "the toughest rally in the world". If you guys want to know what makes Dakar the toughest rally in the world, please check some blogs like this:

Thank you all!
Thanks for the details! I guess a game like this attracts a simulation crowd, and they are quite nit-picky, so to say.
One last question to close the loop to my OP:
Are the 18000km2 (eg 133x133km) the kilometer number that is counting on top of the screen as a distance? No, right? The one at the top of the screen is 18000x32 from real world scale, right?
Sorry for the confusion. The speed of 500km/h in the game are somewhat hard to understand :)
