No Sound Windows 8 SOLVED
I've read about the solutions to solving Bioshock's sound problem on Windows 7, but the control panel options in Windows 8 seem to differ: I cannot find Stereo Mix. Can anyone help?

SOLVED: dumb ass me, ok here we go. Open control panel, click "Hardware and Sound", click "Sound", click "recording" tab; then ( the part that fooled me ) right click in the middle of the window where the devices are and tick "show disconnected devices". This will bring up Stereo Mix for you to enable and Bioshock/Windows 8 sound problems gone.

For me, this isn't solved at all.

The "Stereo Mix" doesn't appear at all for me, no matter how I toggle the right-click options. I only have Microphone and Line In on the list, though none are connected (disappears if I untick "show disconnected devices"). And since I don't have a microphone connected, I can't just enable it, as MisterBubbles suggests.

In case it means anything, I'm running Windows 8 Pro with Media Center.

Thanks for trying to help, but nothing of that seems to work.

Btw, I also tried enabling the "run as administrator" option, which caused this strange issue, where steam claims the game is already running. Disabling it removed that issue again, so no prob, but that was an unexpected issue. For me, at least.

Giving up on my stationary, will try on my laptop instead later, which has Win 7.

First the sound would not work, and now, oblivious to what I actually did, the game will not even boot up. It brings up a screen asking if I want to allow bioshock.exe to make changes to my computer, I click yes, and nothing happens. Any help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED at this point

if nothing helps just plug something on your mic entry, could be either a headphone or a mic, it really works

Same as vtwilliamsred1. The Stereo Mix doesn't appear regardless of what I do.

Been having trouble with Bioshock as well, tried a lot except looking on the forum. Thanks a lot!

i updated all my drivers, tried different compatibilities, and it still doesn't work. i'd like the game removed from my account and a refund/credit. I tried the fixes posted here. still nothing.

I've got mine working now, and I didn't see the "stereo mix" option. This is what worked for me:

1. Run in compatibility mode "Vista"
2. Plug something into the microphone input jack. I don't have a mic, so I just plugged headphones into it.

This worked for me however I didn't have to run it in compatiabilty mode. I just plugged in headphones into the mic jack then launched the game and it's working!

I tried everything, including plugging something into the sound card itself. I thought about what had changed sice I last played Bioshock that I had from the disc. I had bought a new headphone/mic set and installed the software for it that had Creative drivers and software on it. Once those extra drivers and sofware were removed, Bioshock on steam worked just fine with no compatability changes or anything added to the startup. Fought with this for 3 days before doing this. Ah well, the headphones and mic still work, just no extra stuff on it. People might want to check for any software clashes like I had, something so simple that it does'nt cross your mind.
