How do you defeat big daddy?

Tried stunning, piercing ammo, etc. but he just ends up killing me

Hey tunamix- I just started playing Bioshock and I'm at Neptunes Bounty (2nd level I think) and I've killed a bunch of Big Daddy's (some with Little Sisters and some without). I'm going to quote what I read from a walkthrough I found online by Krzysztof "Lordareon" Gonciarz that I found helpful and inspiring: "You shouldn't skip the Big Daddy fights in the game, you know. This might seem a little tough at first, but saving/killing the Little Sisters is essential to the game. Your weapons are quite weak now, but remember that you have an infinite number of "lives" in the game, and Big Daddy's health doesn't regenerate. You do the math." Up until I read this I was petrified to even engage a Big Daddy. But I'm happy to tell you that you can do it...even with weak weapons. You didn't mention how far into the game you are but you probably must have the "electric" plasma by now which helps with Big Daddy's. Hit em with the electric plasma and immediately switch over to machine gun or better yet the shotgun with the "electic" shot gun shells. Get as much into him as you can while he's incapacitated. Try to find cover while you're dealing with him - the more you can sheild yourself from his return fire the better. The Big Daddy's that have the grenades are a big pain. You're going to die but just keep at it and eventually he'll go down. Speaking of grenades, I just got the grenade gun and it does big damage to Big Daddy - if you don't have it yet, you'll be getting it soon (neptunes bounty level). Also, I have to mention that at first my ego was refusing to let me die so after Big Daddy killed me I would reload the game instead of going forth from the Vita-Chamber. This bonehead move caused me to use up all my health and eve. Well, hope this helped...have fun!

I share too what I've learned my 100 hours of play. What kill almost instantly a Big Daddy even on Hard difficulty:

Fire tip, use the crossbow this is the most effective weapon against a BD, even without upgraded
Grenades, any type of grenade kill fast a BD, only limitation is the small clip and cap
Electric or exploding bullets from the shotgun, I can kill with two clip a BD without dead
Armor-piercing ammo, funny but shooting with a pistol feels more effective then the machine gun
Chemical thwrower also effective, especially the electric gel, but not on Hard difficulty - feels almost useless

I'm on my 2nd big daddy so my ammos are limited. First I clear the area, hack up bots to help, but pretty much use up all my ammo trying to take him down.

I just can't believe it, dude. What difficulty you playing? First time a bit hard to take down a Big Daddy, but it's not impossible. What you will do in NS2 with the Big Sister? 3 times more powerful and able to use more plasmid power than any other character in BioShock.

I never thought about hacking bots (turretts right?). That's a good idea. I don't have a crossbow yet..I just got the grenade launcher. Maybe by the time I meet up w/Big Sister or whatever I'll be better equipped weapon wise to deal with it. It's the beginning of the game, so I don't have squat.

pretty much this ^

and for first ones i used some gas/fuel barrels. stack them up at spot where BD would go, wait him to come closer, and boom.. big chunk of his health is gone.
basicly to get this done you need telekenesis plasmid, pick item up, go to desired spot, and switch to weapon, so item would not be trown, but dropped instead.

Big Sister is in Bioshock 2, just checked one on Google. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, looks badass!

Thanks for the info on Big Sister - I'll have to check her out. Tunamix, I finally realized which bots you were hacking...not turrets, but those little flying guys...duhhh. Other than at the very beginning, where that one bot is blocking the way, I haven't run into any others to hack. Lately, I've been using the telekenesis plasmid to return the grenades Big Daddy throws at me right back at him. Does alot of damage to him and you don't have to waste any ammo.

What I do is try to find some explosive things and blow him up. Then just gun him down with a machine gun or buckshot, since it seems the lower is health, the more damage you do. It isn't working too well for me since I have no ammo as of now.
