First thing that should be known is that the location of your steam games is under
disk:\\(root steam folder)\steamapps\common\Bioshock\Builds\Release.

Now Running Bioshock (All three Versions) on Windows 7 x64. Buy downloading the latest version of DirectX from microsoft (released 2010) and installing this after Bioshocks 1st run setup; I had to set the game's compatibility mode to Vista (service pack 2) mode !!Not XP!!
and the game is running fine with all video options enabled. There is no need to set launch paramiters to -dx9 unless your video card does not support DX10

By the gods, you solved the problem *and* posted the solution. Many thanks, mate. I'm giving this a try as we speak.

Could you throw me a link to where you aquired your DirectX download, however? The only one I seem able to find is from 2011.

DirectX 10 --> "http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=8109"
DirectX 11 isnt applied to this game but if you want to update that get the latest .NET software from microsoft's download center

Didn't work for me. I tried everything I could find from the old forum and the new, without success. Drivers are supposed to be OK (I check for sound, video card is up to date since like 15 days or so). Tried running in XP, Vista (highest SP availabe), with admin rights, with -nosound and -dx9. I'm running on windows 7 64 bit, on a 2500k with a gtx470.

My next step is getting close to asking for a refund sincerely, which highly saddens me

Did you reinstall DirectX 10 after the game installed its version?

yes, I reinstalled both after the game did his things. I sent a support email to 2k, but I don't expect much for at least 1 week.

Try going through these post's from the bioshock developer site, it is a 2K game so steam didnt design the program. If you find a way to make it work please post every step that you could identify as part of the process to get it working on your system. You might find help in the readme file stored in the root game folder. Good luck I hope you get it working.

wouldn't load past exe crash. I exited FRAPS which was also running on my system after reading it elsewhere and the game loads no problems now.

I'm getting visual but no audio from the moment the plane crashes? Even into the game.

Guaranteed WORKAROUND/FIX here. Bit complex for those who never did it but theres a lot of tutorial on the interweb so I wont bother writing down one here. Note that you need at least 4 gb of ram to be a able to get reasonable performance from it. Since it is basicly emulation. Download Oracle VirtualBox wich make you able to install a virtual computer on your system without having to dualboot. You will still have to install your drivers, OS and everything. If you still have a copy of winxp I suggest your use that one since it uses less memory (in fact with win xp 32bit i think even 3gb ram could do it...). It worked perfectly for me on my linux based computer so I dont see why the hell it wouldnt work on windows.

oh and forgot to mention. you need a dual core at least. I know this is a stupid line here since in 2013 it would be surprising for anyone not to have a dual core at least (with price drops from past years) because you have to ''reserve'' a cpu core for the virtual machine while its running.
