How scary are the Bioshock games!?
I am quite a squeemish person. Hate horror games/films and especially jumpscares. Saw the Bioshock bundle sale on steam and was like 'I need to buy it for that amazing price!'. However I played the DEMO of no.1 and was a bit sppooked after. But in terms of jumpscares, how scary the game is etc on a scale of 1-10 what would you number is? Its a game/series worth buying even though I hate horror games!?

It's most "jump scary" part lies in the first few hours of the game, when you have no idea what's going on.

Later, though, you get used to the "jump scare" simply because you're so overpowered that it's like seeing a cockroach in terms of disinterest. Sure, it's disgusting, but it's not threatening. At that point, the games move on to conceptual horror of walking through a twisted world and seeing political theories taken to extreme.'

It's a great game, but if you hate horror games, I don't think you'll enjoy this.

Bioshock 1 is the only one that tries overly hard to scare you. Like Wicked says, it scariest bits are when you have no idea what's going on. The splicers are a bit unsettling at first glance, but you and your Webley revolver quickly get used to it. Bioshock 2 has you play as an unstoppable badass from day 1, no scares there. Both games do deal with the idea of hopelessness, genocide and suicide, drug abuse, and murder so if those upset you, you might be better off playing another game.

As above, it's not a horror game in the traditional sense, though much of what goes on (has gone) on in Rapture could be described as "Horrific" by a lot of people.

It's unsettling, macabre, sadistic, twisted, intriguing and thought provoking, but not a horror game in a true sense of the word.

For what it's worth, I never found the game to be scary at all, this is coming from a guy who was scared of ghosts so bad I caused myself possible brain damage from hiding under the sheets all night for years as a child.

To this day, I still wake-up when my dreams turn into nightmares looking at my computer chair that has swiveled towards my bed thinking a demon has been watching me in my sleep, influencing my dreams. I'm in my mid-30's btw.

And no, I have never had a bad dream about this game. It would be sad, to miss out on a possibly great experience. Buy it, try it and if you don't like it, you can get a steam refund.

Omg I hope youre ok with everything now! That does sound like a worry...o.O

Steam refund? How does it work? I read "The Steam refund offer, within two weeks of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime". ?

Thanks, it's okay- just the aftermath of my family saying I was possessed as a child. But if you knew how crazy my family was, that would not faze you lol.

Yeah exactly, you can refund a game quite easily providing you fit the criteria mentioned in the FAQ. As you said, less than 2 hours played and ownership less than two weeks.

Its not scary at all. There are no jumpscares but there were some moments where the monsters come out of nowehere and attack you. That scared me like 2-3 times but nothing more. Trust me i never play horror games cause i get scared too easy so if i survived bioshock (which is not even a horror game to begin with) without getting a heart attack you will definitely be able to play it without any problems.

Isn't that essentially what a "jump scare" is?

It's not that scary at all.
The Story is the focus in this game.
So don't be afraid to play it it's a very good game in an impressive under water world.

Not scary at all. U can have some surprises in some scripted moments but that's it.
If you wanna throw up your heart, play Alien Isolation.

The game itself is a very atmospheric game, the setting might be a bit "spooky" because of the mutated people and whatnot, but overall its not that scary, unless you really dislike blood and stuff.

its not scary, you get used to it pretty quickly, i've done this game on normal, and on hard, thinking about doing it again just for fun on easy or something.

If you want a less scary time, i would suggest just start the game on easy/normal, the less hard it is the less scary it is ;P

If you can basicly just shoot the "scary thing" down pretty quickly its alot less scary.

And then obviously you feel more powerful, thusly its less scary, hope that helps.

Thanks for the kind and helpful messages everyone. I bought the trilogy for £6 on the haloween sale. Silly question but going back to dofficulty, as ZirzoR mentioned, I am new to the bioshock series but its an fps right? So I played many fps, does it matter what difficulty I choose?

Well let me just put it like this, if you play it on hard the first time around, your not going to have that much fun ;P

Bioshock has abit of a learning curve, its not just about aiming and shooting.

What do you mean by "Bioshock has abit of a learning curve, its not just about aiming and shooting"??
