BioShock

BioShock

Started playing recently, control scheme is making me crazy.
Compared to Infinite, Rapture is a more interesting place than Columbia. The nature of the enemies and being at the bottom of the ocean makes the game much creepier. In many ways I'm liking Bioshock more than Bioshock Infinite, but the control scheme for Bioshock is much more frustrating. Some of the amazingly bad default keys mappings (um, shift and rmb) can be remapped, but other problems just can't be solved with kep remappings.

I'm wondering what other k/b + m players to to make this game more playable?

First the weapons/plasma swapping hotkeys.

Getting a plasmid to be consistently mapped to the same hotkey is like solving a puzzle each time you switch plasmids out at a gene bank. Slots 1,2,etc don't map to hotkey F1, F2,etc.

I just started getting weapons back in Fontaine's. I picked up the pistol at now its in slot 3 instead of slot 2. The camera (which should be in slot 6) is in slot 2. I don't know how or if its possible to rearrange the hotkey mappings for these items as i reacquire them. wtf.

Any clues about how to get weapons/plasmids to stay assigned to where they should?

Next the 'fire' button.

Using the LMB to fire a weapon works great (or course), but not-so-much for casting a magic spell. Infinite got that soooo much better with a different key/btn binding to use a gun vs a vigor. Singularity is another FPS with alternate magic powers too, its control scheme is much better than Bioshocks too.

I end up 'shooting' the wrong thing all of the time, running out of eve and dying. This really affects playability of the game for me. Hmmm, I'll trying setting it up so...
* RMB = switches to and fires gun
* T = switches to and fire plasmid

Anybdy have any suggestions for how to make 'shooting' work reasonably in this shooter?

I'm sorry that I don't have an answer, but had to comment that you wrote my thoughts exactly. LOL. I played Infinite FIRST, and have the absolutely identical set of gripes. I've found no real workaround either. I have two "left side" extra mouse buttons that I use for swapping that helps a little, but it's kinda kludgy at best.

I've got it setup like this now.

RMB = switch-to-and-fire gun
V = switch-to-and-fire plasmid
T = just switch

I was trying to use the plasmids more earlier, now i'm mostly just using a gun or the wrench.

I have it set up so that

RMB = Switch between Weapon Mode and Plasmid Mode

and I don't use "switch to and fire" ever. As for switching between Plasmids, I haven't been having too much trouble because I'm using the scroll wheel and have also upgraded the amount of Plasmids I can carry to 5.

It is kind of annoying that I have to readjust to how many scrolls of my wheel it takes to get to a certain plasmid, though.

By the way, I've never encountered the weapons changing places. So I don't know how to help you there.

That wasn't' a problem after all. That only happened because i picked up a pistol a splicer had dropped before i retrieved all of my weapons from the pneumo tube in Fontaine's. When i collected them all, they were all in the right place.

I'm using the wrench more and more as the game progresses. I have lots of wrench perks.
- self-healing + eve regen when hitting with it
- damage boost
- chance to freeze opponents
- lurker perk for hitting unaware enemy
- invisibility cloak (not a wrench perk, but helps me get in close)
- shock enemy when they hit me (helps when i'm in close)

The spider splicers go down in one hit. I tried to take out mr bubbles with the wrench, but that didn't work out so well for me :)

Well that's good to hear. Like you, I too was coming from Infinite and at first found the control scheme to be a little odd. However, it didn't take too long before I got used to them. I still think that pressing RMB to switch between Weapons and Plasmids rather than using "Switch to and Fire" is better because it lets you select the Plasmid you want to use BEFORE you use your EVE.

One press switches, then the next fires and so on. So there is a chance to pick a different plasmid or gun when switching back.

Another solution is to plug in a 360/other controller, then they all control pretty much the same.

Question: how the ♥♥♥♥ does one play an FPS with a controller after using a mouse period?

Considering I didn't yet play Infinite, I'm having no problems playing this game.
Good thing I started with the first game. xD :gordon:

Erm... when you fight Fontaine the only weapon besides Camera you have is the Wrench. We all had to beat him using Wrench and Plasmids.

Keep playing the game, you'll see what fight i'm talking about, it'll be obvious when you get there. You're thinking of Peach Wilken's, paranoid guy who sends you to get the camera and then takes your weapons, he's holed up at Fontaine's Fishery.

Oh right, yeah. That's what I was thinking of because you fight Peach in Fontaine Fishery. I take that back.

Well, you know, people get used. I beat this game some time ago with a mouse, it was all great but only except for horrible controls. I always got confused with what weapon or plasmid will be in my hands when I pressed the button.
But now, when I replay game with a controller, it's all wonderful. So easy now to understand where plasmids and weapons are since they're separated with left and right triggers, it becomes intuitive. Of course, aiming is not that good when with KB/M, but at least I always shoot with what I want.

Yeah I'm haveing a hard time getting used to it again. I gave this game away about 6 years ago. When digital downloads was in it's infacy. Now I have it for good!
