I've tried;
1) Changing MaxChannels from 128 to 64 (and other lower numbers)
2) Editing the default.ini to ";AudioDevice=FMODAudio.FMODAudioSubsystem
AudioDevice=D3DDrv.D3DAudioDevice"
3) Enabling Sterio Mix, changing the exclusive controls, defaults etc.
4) Manually launching Realtek HD
5) Using headphones both in the 35.mm jack and USB ones.
6) All compatibility modes
7) Launching as Admin
8) Windowed mode
9) Ensuring drivers are up to date
Pretty much running out of ideas and potential solutions.
More and more peeps will be hitting this problem the longer they leave it.
very very annoying ,can't play the game in ths state.
There's a small program called BioShock Tweaker v0.1 on GCW ,it makes it easier to try some tweaks ,haven't tried it on the steam version yet.
I'm reading the 2k forums atmo ,maybe some new help might be on there:
(though it might be for the non-steam versions)
Something about Gomplayer and audio codecs in this first thread below:
http://forums.2k.com/showthread.php?110002-Known-Bioshock-1-Issues
I have k-lite codec pack installed ,not sure if that might cause issues.
Alot of these adjustments usually need the pc to be restarted which is double annoying.

where have u got the first ones plugged in ?
In the headphone jack.
insane ,but if it works then all good.
I plugged in some headphones into the "mic hole" when the computer was off and when i booted and started the game i had the sound back .
I was close to giving up.
I was gonna install winxp on a separate partition just so i could try and play the game.
Not quite sure what fixed it but it works now.
