Fish got away
Hi.

I am experiencing a lot of "fish got away" recently, mainly bottom fishing (eg. Amur Catfish). My bottom fishing is almost 100%. My lvl is 32. Paternoster rig (which I use currently) is full, all 3 points. I started noticing that when I came to Lower Tunguska river 2 weeks ago. In this 2 weeks I think I had at least 30 "fish got away". I've lost every second fish in last few days now while bottom fishing at night at a 17m hole for amur catfish or burbot.

Ok, I know amur catfish is a bottom fish which is "glued" to the bottom when on the hook, but it's mainly a 1.5kg fish. And no matter what I try I still lose fish. I spent a lot of money on reel repair (friction break) thinking it would help, I tried reeling from aside, with or without "shift", sometimes I let fish stick to the bottom for 1-2 ingame hours thinking to my self maybe it helps, I tried reeling slower, not forcing fish out, letting fish to tire itself, I use the best hooks possible - bigger, smaller, you name it, leader, no leader, braided line, nylon line, I don't move so there is constant tention on fish, no slacks, with reel break in lower / higher digits...but forcing fish out or not forcing it, I still get "fish got away".

At first fish is sort of...stuck behind the ridge at the bottom, and there is nothing I can do about it no matter how high the reel break is and what other options I try. After some time fish is ready to be reeled in or to go away. Once again I must say, those are small fish 1-2kg.

My last 4 bites today I got 1 Amur catfish, and 3 were "fish got away". Is there anything I can do to avoid that from happening?? Because I am getting very frustrated now...to the point this game is not fun anymore. I didn't grind all these hours, days and months, spent money on premium, spent silver for excellent equipment in order to get this now and at this point in game. I mean, lvl 32 is much more than 16. When I was lvl 16 I don't remember being "Shaquille O'Neal from the free throw line, 1/4". That's only 25% success.

I won't even mention "fish got away" moments when you don't even realize you had a bite in first place...that's a discussion for itself.

It should be easy to reel a small specimen fish with good tackle? It's not rocket science, right?
Or maybe I didn't learn a thing in one year of playing, it was just pure luck all the time and now that I reached comfortable levels in game I am starting to realize I suck?

Sorry for a long post, it was more of a philosophical observation a lot of other players have with "fish got away" issue. Is it me, us, is it a bug, game glitch?

I am not asking for an answer, just had it all on my mind.

Thanks for reading though.

Same here, i restarted playing around your time in 2021, in a week i lost 8/10 of every decent catch i made to the point i was frustrated and stop playing...

i came back again last week, i litteraly just lost 5/7 big fish i had in kuori lake .. and the 2 i reeled in are not the big catch i lost..

same here, i changed my hooks my line and everything and i still got fish got away 80% of big catch ..

i feel the same having spending hundred of hour to get lvl 27 buy so many 5 star gear, reserched the forum in and out for tips ... and then boummm EVERY fun fish to catch just seem to (fish got away). My line is always tense no slack i always have decent energy and always roll max reel in, i tried to cork the rod in every way every tips show on the internet...still no avail it is REALLY strange

i got 5 point in spinning rod (for control) of fish and 3 (maxed) in spoon fishing ..i litteraly almost cant have anything better....

Best spoon, best hooks, over decent reel, 8 point only in spinning for control, always tense line and full reeling with never letting a losse.... i litteraly just lost my last big fish when there was no action from fish for a while and reeling in it ...poufff magic ...just like he disapered from the rod

Still losing every fun fish to catch

were you on premium when this had happened ? im not anymore and im starting to feel there is something under the carpet..

just like you i never lost a fish or maybe like 3-5 you know until i got lvl 25 and more & stop playing for a year...I restarted without premium and boum losing my fish on 100$ zenith hooks 80% of the time ...

the last 5 full day in real life of fishing i lost EVERY DECENT fish

this game is no fun anymore and i strongly suspect there is a way higher catch rate and also not miracoulusly losing a fish with best gear when you are premium..

RF4 From fun to frustrating :)

First of all, the accusation that the fish got away chance is higher for non-premium players is absolutely untrue. Please do not make statements like this, they will only get you in trouble. There are definitely things that will cause fish to get away more often. Putting too much pressure on the fish and reeling while the fish is pulling line are two of the main things that greatly increase the chance. Putting a rod into the holder or down during the fight is another. Please also remember I can see your catch and fish got away history. I have looked at yours for the last week. The fish got away to fish caught ratio is nowhere near as high as you say.

1. Like Crucian said, there is zero correlation between pay2win and any fish interaction. I've been f2p for 95% of my time in the game.

2. You can rip the hook out of the fishes mouth, especially carp.

3. Bait size in comparison to hook size seems to make a difference, in my experience. If the bait is on the larger size compared to the hook, the hookset seems to be less stable.

4. Always set the hook.

hi, i didnt meant my ratio of total catched fish versus lost fish, i meant the ratio of when i got a big fish on the line, i lose it.

Just lost the last 3 big in like an hour or two real life timespan.

In the last day i gamed for about 8 hour (real life) i reeled in in 1 trophy but then I lost another 4 big fish. One before going to bed and then 3 today ... like i loses all the fun fish to catch in those eight hour of gaming. i tried to not reel in when he was swimming away, i tried to not put much pressure... i still lost them in like 2 minute with a U1 zentih, and rage treble hook ...i almost dont even have time to fight them... i could understand after 10 minute or 15. i try to stay positive but that 3rd big fish in a row just break my in half litteraly XD

Why dont i lose smaller fish 2-3-4 ...like never... why can swing them around in the air and never lose them ?

what is it im doing with them that is not working with bigger fish ? because in real life i loses fish big AND small ones ...

I'd very much to understand what im doing wrong

If you can see my history and the fish which was lost if you can share it with me (in a private message i dont mind) I would very like to compared them to my other catch in the last 24 hour so you will see what i mean in term of big fish ratio lost.

Tyvm for your insight

The larger the fish, the more pressure that is being exerted onto the hook and the lip. If the fish is strong enough to make a run and pull line, but you're still reeling, this could put too much pressure on the hookset and rip the hook out.

Just to be sure, you are using control click combo to set the hook, right?
Rosepirate (Banned) Jan 21, 2022 @ 12:25pm
im using my own controller combination with anti micro, so as i can say.... no im not using ctrl + rmb (only shown in quick guide)..will try even though its the first time i ever got any amention about this

yesterday i lost another 2 fish before bed using crucian tips,, giving the fish no pressure, never reel in when it was running, not using shift reel...no avail

i have been fishing for hundred of hour in this game and i NEVER saw a mention ANYWHERE about this...

when i search on google rf4 hook set, rf4 how to set hook. and other variation ... there isnt even a single post or video about this...what does it do exactly, is it usefull in spinning fishing ? all type of fishing (float and feeder ? ) i really love how i played hundred of hours but still dont get info on BASIC* tutorial stuff...
is this new ? may i have missed it since i started playing 2 year ago ?
i have read in and out rf4 forum for every tip possible like 4 time already about line hook size hook shape, everything but not that... same for youtube not a single on this

yet you say it like if it something i should already be knowing since long

I never see a mention anywhere about this ...im probably blind ...can you describe in full what this fonction do and why aren't they explaining it anywhere ? why should i use it ? etc etc

lol ...first interesting fish today, good i'll try hook set, good its done ...now apply every tips by crucian and youtubes... 2 min ....oups fish got away ... hahahahha so fun this game

funny how since i try every tip by dev and pro player im losing even more fish than before my complain..

cant really base any info as usefull at this point sorry. another lvl 42 saying the same on the forum and all he got is your ratio of lost fish is not abnormal ...when he was defently talking about losing BIG fish ...at lvl 42 ...we all know this guy have gear and skill beyond imagination but he seem to live the same thing as me

its hard to get better when every info seem to be contracdicting at some point....really just a pro youtbe rf4 just litteraly said : NEVER stop SHIFT reeling... when dev say the opposite ...this youtube guy fish ton and ton of trophy back to back...never lose even one
Why is that if he does does like shift relling , keeping line tense (aka putting pressure).

what is my basis of information at this point

very bizzare he seem to nail every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ big fish but im using everything he says and even more..... after losing 2-3 fish ...i try the dev tips just to lose more ... great :) absolute happiness

I really don't know what to tell you. I rarely get fish got away.
Are you using braided line?

And maybe try without the controller. Could be some sort of input lag.
Rosepirate (Banned) Jan 21, 2022 @ 1:02pm
mono line, fluor leader, 5 star hook, and every other tips possible .... i lost so many big fish in the last 2 days ...its sickening

I dont care abouit reeling in 100 2kg lake trout if i cant reel 1/3 - 1/4 big fish im cataching, i have a 17k drag reel, super casting rods, 14,5 kg beluga so when i say big a mean big fish... the fish we all play hour to get you knwo ...not the 50 perch in between ...im not playing for that really ...its just a plain lost of time and when im like o yeahhh this fish gonna be fun after 1 hour of sad as hell trolling and small fish that dosent even give a single gossebump ...fish got away and again and again and again. yay one then fish got away again and again..really hard to think positive ....i dont even fight them anymore ... at lvl 17 i was draggin 15 kg kuori with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ hooks all over the lake for 20-30 minute and rarely lost a single one

so with better hook and all and all what happenend in between ?

P.s. TALKING ABOUT BIG FUN FISH***** not ALL FISH

best tips i can give you
- set hook at start of the fight (ctrl+rmb)
- Dont shift reel, or use regular rmb during the fight
- Make sure your hook size is in line with the fish your are trying to catch (S1 - S2/0 for kuori char)
- Dont pressure the fish to the max, (Red tension bar) keep the stuff in green. Vast majority of fish are either lost during slack line or when the tension bar is red.
dma29379 Jan 22, 2022 @ 10:42pm
Dont shift reel, or use regular rmb during the fight ............. second that i never rmb reeling in
Crucian Jan 23, 2022 @ 12:02pm
@s.gagnon,

First of all I understand you are frustrated, but please be easy on the language. If Steam has to filter it, then you shouldn't be saying it. We are all doing nothing but trying to help you. When I say putting pressure on the fish, I mean holding right click to pull the rod up. If you are having trouble losing big fish, you should only be doing this to lift the fish from the water after you have reeled it in. Also, are you ensuring that you are using the correct hooks? This can make a big difference in escapes. There are also specific hooks for different types of fishing, so read the descriptions carefully. The size of the hook is also important. Too big or too small can also increase the chance of escapes. Sometimes you can get better results from a lure by putting a better hook on it. I am not allowed to share specific info about the fish that escape. What I will tell you is in the past 3 days you have lost one fish I would consider large, one I might consider medium, and no trophies.
Rosepirate (Banned) Jan 24, 2022 @ 8:59am
ty all for the tips, i have lose less fish in the last 2 days doing so, btw crucian, sorry for that little slip of languages. I would also like to point out that i said big fish (i have no way to know if its a trophy). maybe for you a 9 kg kuori isnt that big or a 9 kg pike ... but for me right those ARE MY big fish i can get... i never said i was losing trphy all over the map etc etc ... i was complaining about big fish. the fact that you answer my plea with my ratio of all fish lost versus fish caught is absolutely irrelevant. then you second saying thaqt for YOU i lost 1 big 1 medium and no trophy is little big more insightfull but still dosent answer the question.

why am i losing big fish (A.k.a) fish that putting me in fight for more than 30 sec 1 min with my current setup gear, fish that give me some fun/worry while playing ;) you absolutely know what i mean and those asking the same on forum also. its just what they want to know ... why do they fish for 1 hour to lose the single fun fish they get with their setup ( im not speaking about not being prepare geared stuff ;))

anyway i'l try to aplly those tips as hell and see where this goes from there considering its looking like improving ty all
Rosepirate (Banned) Jan 24, 2022 @ 9:05am
one last question, when the fish is coming toward me or in a such manner that the line get slack off to almost or to zero, should i use a little bit of shift reeling to clear the gap or is it more dangerous to lose it by doing so and focus solely on normal reeling even tho the fish is coming toward me like a bullet :)

p.s. those would be the tips that should be in the what i would call medium tutorial btw that should be launch when you hit lvl 10 or something because none of this is mention in your tutorial ;)
