1. Run optimal install using the method in the above link
2. Select sound card setup when complete
3. Select Gravis Ultrasound (you can verify with the sound test). Note that selecting other options caused DOSBox to freeze and I would have to exit and reinstall again to get back
4. Leave Gravis Ultrasound settings at defaults and exit configuration
5. Launch XCOM. It should now have sound again
So that if that is the case, just doing a normal steam install with updated DOSbox and config as in the guide, will be just as fine and easier without breaking sound.
