I cut --- 8>< --- and pasted my section but you will have get to know your hardware and find the apropriate settings to make it work!
# <-- This is a comment. If you remove the comments it activates the line.
DON"T FORGET to SAVE after EDITING the .txt file. Backing UP the original file is NOT a bad Idea either but Steam can repair and patch files back as well !

I think that's what my i7 Intel CPU on my Asus mainboard uses as well for sound. But I have never had sound issues. This could be a Windows sound drivers issue as well. You should be able test the sound in Windows by going to the control panel, sound and opening the various dialogs.
After building my mainboards, then after installing Windows, the mainboards also ship with a CROM full of device drivers in order to use the full functions of that particular board under Windows. Most of the time you have to go to the website of that board and get the newest updates.
I am sure there is a simple solution for the sound. I have played X-COM AP for 350 hours to completion with NO sound issues. But the main issue with the game is having to do saves because it still wants to see a CD in the tray. But there are some fixes for this as well. :)
Remeber this is an old title game from the 1990's. :) But it's a great game ! :)
Right now I am in the middle of a very long playing game of X3 Terrain Conflict. 650 hours.
X3TC is some what boring initially but it takes quite a bit of trading, buying to build your very own empire. Pretty solid game and complex as well. :)
T/C and have a Happy New Year !

Just change in the dosbox.conf file the blocksize number from '4096' to '1024' in the [mixer] section
