Alternatively, you can allow them to attack your base, if you get lucky with that.
Also, if you find a Dreadnought with mixed crew, it can contain a single deep one, alongside lobstermen/aquatoids/tenta's and hallucinoids. Not the most ideal way to get one, but it could work.
I'm way past the 4th month. They really did stop appearing after I built my first containment. I am definately in unlucky territory. =\
I seem to keep running into everything BUT gillmen and deepones. I still see and fight aquatoids a lot. Its weird. And driving me nuts!
Start the game then build:
*General Stores
*Wide Array Sonar
*Alien Containment
*Living Quarters
Works for me
its been over a year since I posted this, but yes I remember putting off containment and capturing aliens to properly research and outfit my guys with weapons that weren't complete ♥♥♥♥. Deep Ones completely stopped appearing after 2 months. I also didn't have foreknowledge of TftD having a game breaking bug related to researching advanced craft.
After 2 or so in-game years of waiting for a Deep One to appear, one never did. I was never able to research advanced craft. I had gotten far enough along that I could see the final mission teasing me, but I couldn't reach it.
My first time playing TftD. The constant 2 part missions were wearing on me. The being able to clear out a map but not auto finish it because of the one alien world record hide-and-seek champion was ultra BS.
Got so bored, annoyed, and frustrated that I gave up. Terror from the Deep sucks.
