Screen resolution problems
I have been trying to edit the DosBox configuration files for TFTD so that the game can fit my screen whist being windowed at 1920x1080, but the games does not appear to be responding to the inputs from DosBox. I would really like some help with this. It's rather minor for an issue, but any suggestion is appreciated...

go to your tftd folder in steam.
Loacation where steam is\SteamApps\common\X-COM Terror from the Deep
then open the file doxbox.conf
here you find the line:
fullscreen=true
set it to
fullscreen=false
now look for
windowresolution=original
swap it to a format that match to your desktop settings but don't forget that the windowframe itself need some room too.
so choose a nearby resolution like 1600x900 or 1280x720
windowresolution=1280x720
or
windowresolution=1600x900

you can stretch the aspect radio to your new setings:
aspect=false

set it to
aspect=true

but you should know that this will make the game look different.
the earth will look like an egg ...

I have tried the fix, but DOSBOX starts at the resolution I want, then immediately shrinks down to an unplayable size. any way to stop that?

you must alter the old settings in the config file .
if you just add new without to remove the old then you create chaos.

fulldouble=false
fullresolution=original

output=opengl
autolock=true
sensitivity=75
waitonerror=true
priority=higher,normal
mapperfile=mapper.txt
usescancodes=true

what screen resoution do you use for your desktop ?
KilledAlive Jan 21, 2015 @ 3:21pm
my native resolution (for my other computer) is 3840X2160 (4K)

Also, I found that modifying the scaler to "Normal13x" brought the game window to a playable size, but not entirely satifactory.

ill look this over. thanks!

To keep Earth round and not egg shaped, use window resolution that's multiply of original 320x200 (anything 16:10) and don't use aspect (leave it at aspect=false). For fullscreen use your display native resolution. Keep scaler=none, it's software scaling. Better just set resolution and let the hardware do scaling.

You have a scaler that doesn't give you good results. It'll shrink back down if it doesn't think the scaler is working properly for the resolution. Have you tried changing the scaler to advinterp2x or advinterp3x?

I have fiddled with the scalers and found the correct scaler. Thank you!

The windowed mode works fine when DOSBOX opens, but as soon as Terorr from the deep launches, it goes back into the smallest possible resolution, unless i set capture to ddraw and not opengl. but then OBS doesn't work. any ideas?

It's not just any small resolution you're seeing, it's 320x200 (or x240 if you have aspect correction). You should open the DOSBOX.CONF file with a text editor (you'll find it in the same folder as DOSBOX) and set scaler to something like normal3x. Add " forced" to the scaler line if your desired scaler isn't applying.

You will also have a much better experience if you update DOSBOX to 0.74-3, its latest version: https://www.dosbox.com/ If I remember correctly, the Steam version uses 0.63 or some other hopelessly outdated version. Just drag the new files directly over

Alternatively, just set up OpenXCom if you want to skip a lot of headaches. It's a fantastic source port for both UFOD and TFD that runs natively in Windows and smooths out the experience while remaining faithful to the original. Aside from fixing the game, it brings countless small QoL and bugfix related tweaks that can basically make or break the experience. It also has great mod support.

thanks for the advice!

one related question: I tried using openXCOM before, but it didn't recognize my save games. do i have to start over or is there anyway to get it to recognize those saves?

EDIT:
Sweet thanks, the normal3x scaler worked. for anyone else getting issues with OBS, i set output to openGL, set the resolution, and then set scaler to normal3x. now its capturing input and the resolution isn't 300x200 anymore!

ill check out open Xcom next
