I have issues with especially the early game where Im having to waste resources researching basic machine and hand guns. You know things every standard army in the world uses. Filler for filler sake.
Its a bit common throughout the research trees.
Then there are still issues where you can get really unlucky and just never get certain key pieces gear so you just cant progress the game. I lve run into this twice never even seeing the othe rhuman faction for 2 years ingame thus never being able to build better ships.
-------
I have one other gripe and thats actually the pacing its still off but thats in part because of the filler research and how unclear it is in parts what it is you need to do to progress you main "storyline"
-----
For what it is its great and it adds a bunch to the base game.
"Sir, we've found this pointy stick on one of our enemies. It appears like they are using it as a weapon, but we have no idea how. Our top scientists are studying it now."
Yes, it feels a bit off not knowing about the existence of revolvers or spears. It is indeed a filler. You should get all this basic crap at the start or with single weapons acquisition tech.
But on the other hand you don't really need to research much of those. You just make the beeline to x-rifles and gas cannon, XCOM style ;). And those puppies are going to stay with you until you get to gauss weapons - which will take at least few months, and those are going to stay relevant for quite some time too.
I think this is one of the best features of this mod. You don't go straight to endgame weapons, but have some nice checkpoints along the way. This feels really fresh and rewarding.
Hey, those kind of 'features' are considered canon for original XCOM games. You do need a bit of luck, just like in real life ;)
Also, I did quite a bit of restarting in the beginning (learning tech tree) and always got church missions and sunken ufos early on. So far so good. Might be a version thing - this mod gets updated every six months or so.
Tech tree is cluttered and hard to analyze indeed. Had to watch some playthroughs and reload a couple of times to get the general idea what to get first.
As for pacing - this modpack makes the game longer, harder and more complicated. Yes please, take my money :)
What other modpacks would you recommend?
I do find it kind of laughable how much the modder sucks off Russia though, it being 2040 and at least half of the standard purchaseable weaponry is all outdated russian gear from the 70's and 80's. It kind of takes me out of it and breaks what immersion the mod brings by being so flagrant in how for every other gear item it says "Ah yes, this item is popular Russian weapon" or "cutting edge Russian tech".
1) the horridly long missions that pop up. The research base is ridiculously long and even more of a pain than the original cruise ship terror missions
2) reliance on capturing aliens that only have a small window where they are common. This was a problem in TFTD too (deep ones), but it's way worse in this mod.
i just try to capture every alien on every mission and that's it. Sure, it's harder than killing them, when you have SC harpoon or gauss rifles, but hey! Just bring shocky shock sleepy harpoon on every mission and voila.
imho this mod is much better than xcom files. now that mod drags ooooon and ooon with booring mission and bullet sponge enemies
I agree with it being weird that they’re using 1970s weapons, but the focus is Russian because the mod is developed by a Russian
To make it work, in the Mods option in the menu, select YES for 'The world of (terryfying) silence' and click OK.
I downloaded and unzipped the files, my issue here with this
"3. Copy original game files into the 'TFTD' folder of the unzipped thing. Original game files are in the folder 'TFD' of your steam game directory.
4. Execute the 'OpenXcomEx.exe' file and enjoy."
The unzipped mod does not have a TFTD folder nor a openxcomex.exe file. How can I use this mod?
I also had the same problem, this is the steps I took to get it working.
Hope this will help,
(1) Go To here ---> https://mod.io/g/openxcom/m/the-world-of-terrifying-silence
(2) Go To where it says Download Files Manually ---> View (18) Other Versions
(3) In Changelog go to next page and select version 2.50 to Download
I found that the newer versions in the Chanelog are missing the key elements reqired to make this mod to work.
Hope this will help you.

P.S. I also think if you install the latest OXCE file v7.15, and copy version 2.50 to that directory, it should also work giving you the most up to date version openxcomex.exe file.
Again, I hope this will work for you.
