And this is emulated on DosBox.

Speaking of which, does this game actually work in dos, like version 6.22 on an older computer?

I might pick it up and just copy it over if that is the case. why emulate when you can be frustrated by the real thing? i have the hardware that is emulated; I imagine it'll work OK as far as being compatible for the system type it was written for.

It's the whole "made different so it doesn't work quite as badly in an emulation on an OS released 20+ years later" that has me worried.

I actually don't know if Steam version can be ran off DOS. From the way it's programmed, I would imagine it's a DOS box package, but you may be able to rig it to do so with some tinkering; but I would recommend OPENXCOM instead, because, just because it's vanilla doesn't mean it's better, OPENXCOM is made by players with wat players want in mind, including a myriad of bug fixes and quality-of-life functions you would have to suffer through on DOS or DOS-boX.

Well, the only real issue with DOS box is the funky window size and issues when you switch between full screen with alt+enter with it. Otherwise, it's just the same as DOS. Both of them suffer from huge framing issues due to smoke/fire/map. I am also pretty sure OPENXCOM fixes some research bugs that were still left on X-COM gold.

I am 2 years late :)) In any case, for a real DOS machine, you should use an abandonware version which contains the original executables. Just make sure you buy the Steam version too so that it's legal :)

Honestly I find the game works best with recent versions dosbox. Basically this game runs with a really old version of dosbox. Just download a new version and, open a shell, cd to the game files, and run "dosbox terror.com". You may want to tweak the dosbox settings a bit.

The website of the guys who made openxcom say that it was made for the original game only... where did you get the instructions to make it work with terror from the deep?5

those info pages are years old and likely haven't been updated at all. Just download any Nightly version.

Yea sorry everyone ignore me just install XCOM and/or TFTD from steam or GOG AND then download the latest EXE file (nightly) and just run it, it is an automatic installer... man, what a labour of love for a 20+ year old game, gotta give these guys some credit... I played but never beat the original as a kid, finally beat it a couple years ago and now I want to try TFTD before moving on to the later games (I heard that the third original game isn't great, so I was planing to just skip it, particularly as there is no OpenXcom version...

actually, OPENAPOC exists

I'm not sure it's still being working on, unfortunately. I always thought that Apocalypse had the greatest potential, but it wasn't realized because of development time and resources.

It had an amazing, fully destructible city, destructible buildings in tactical view, a diplomacy / relation system with over a dozen organizations and more.
