I would think so, as you can rebind keyboard

In case of games that have only a few actions and don't require a mouse you are usually better off with a controller. This game is a perfect candidate for a controller just like most side-scrolling and fighting games. You should really invest either in an xbox or a playstation controller. Not to mention that some games can be played really well only with a controller that has analogue stick(s) and/or analogue trigger(s) that can't be substituted with keyboard/mouse.

Since I use my controller mostly with dpad-friendly games I prefer the playstation controller over the xbox one because the ps controller has the dpad in the most left-thumb friendly area. In contrast the xbox controller's primary direction input is a stick. Also, the sticks of the xbox controller are better and more comfortable so that controller is better for games that require a stick. In my opinion accessing the dpad with the left-thumb is uncomfortable on the xbox controller while on the ps controller both the dpad and the left stick are relatively comfortable to access because they are closer.

I agree that you should probably play with controller rather than keyboard.

But, if you do choose keyboard. I play with keyboard+mouse only, and this is my set-up.

@TRON I know there are games that would be controller friendly. My priorities just don't allow me to buy one lol. When I have money to get a controller I buy more games (curse you steam sales). I played Dark Souls 3 and beat it with a keyboard, and spent some time on Dark Souls 2 with some rerouting of the keys. Mega Man 11 I played on my keyboard and quickly got used to my set up (I just wished I could pew lemons with my mouse). So yeah, the whole time I was playing those games, I wanted a controller, but felt an accomplishment doing it without one. So that is why I asked.

Thanks guys!

So you know a controller would be better and you know you won't buy it... Then why the question or this whole thread?

Maybe because I was willing to finally break down and actually do it, I get a discount at my job on controllers now. If the game could be played without a controller though then why would I want to do it? That's what I found out about the other games I played, that I can enjoy and play them without a controller even though it would be EASIER with one.

If a game requires only digital buttons (no analogue sticks or triggers) then it is often easier to play them with a keyboard not only because you have more keys available but you can usually utilise more fingers and you have more keys that you can press immediately without moving your fingers. A controller is advantageous or necessary only if the game utilises analogue sticks and/or triggers that aren't available with keyboard/mouse. In case of some games where the game is playable both with a controller and keyboard/mouse I often play with a controller because of the experience. I can lay back and hold it in my hands.

I often play with my PS4 controller and due to geometry and button placement of today's controllers and my style (the way I hold the controller) I can utilise only my thumb and pointer fingers (4 fingers) compared to 10 fingers of a keyboard. Some people with different style can utilise their middle fingers too, but not more. Not to mention that keyboards have much more options when it comes to automation/macro software. For example in the PC version of Soul Calibur 6 I have the option to play with both keyboard and controller and I play it with a controller for the experience. However, in a few cases I played against guys who executed some actions so quickly that would be impossible without macros and even if I used a macro software with the controller I wouldn't have enough keys on the controller to put the macro on.

In one of the games I recenelty played with (Mercenary Kings) I could've switched my active weapon/item more easily with a keyboard but I still played it with my controller because of the experience and becuase the keyboard wouldn't have been a too big advantage (and the game isn't PvP anyway to eagerly push for optimisations).

Summing it up: in some games you NEED a controller because of the analogue stick and in some other games that require only digital buttons they are the same in regards of difficulty unless the game has a lot of actions or you want to use macros that might make the keyboard an easier option due to having more buttons that you can access more quickly with more fingers. A lot of games on steam need only a few buttons (assuming you don't want macros) so a controller can provide a nice gaming experience. If you plan playing more games where a controller is needed (analogue sticks/triggers) or the controller isn't a huge disadvantage (a lot of 2D/sidescrolling games) then it's a very good investment (especially because they aren't so expensive).
