While I've enjoyed both games, I've played more the Messenger than Shovel Knight.
It's important to say that I've only played SK's main campaign, I still have a lot to play. So I think it's right to say that in therms of replay value SK has more to offer with different characters and playstiles.
I don't think we can compare those games in any other aspects but both are great and have amazing devs. Both deserve the support.
No matter which one you pick you don't have to worry, it can't go wrong.
So I'd say Messenger, easily, though I liked Shovel Knight as well, especially the (I forget his name) latest expansion.
I don't like Shovel Knight entirely. Shovel of Hope I very much dislike. Plague of Shadows has nice writing but I get sick of the gimmick real fast. Specter of Shadow is amazing and I love it.
Messenger on the other hand, while I am not a fan of the metroidvania parts because I think they weren't needed, has fantastic writing from start to finish, the mechanics are fluent as butter and overall a better package imo.
