The real boss of the game
SO i love this game so much and yet hate it at the same time. I enjoy the tactics, the graphics, music, choices, story. Game gets plus 10 from me. However, i give it -99 because the RNG is brutal in this game. never been able to build a team/character out the way i want because even when using LP rerolls i can't get the option i want. Wanted to do a Guardian two hander with vigilance but get shoved archer and berserker choices down my throat. Want to do a Support mystic but get offensive only choices. about the only characters that seem to go right are archers for me. Just can't figure out what i am doing wrong other then touching the controller

What you're doing wrong is taking a character and saying "ok, this run they will be X" before looking at the abilities they are offered.

Treat character building more like a roguelike; take what you're offered, roll with the RNG. Don't try to fight the system to get the exact abilities you want. If you want a hero with a specific build, you can refine it via Legacy.
you dont build a char in one go, you build it in several steps with the Legacy. each time you choose a Legacy char you can pick starting skills for him that he known in his last run. and with each legacy level you can pick more of this skills. so you gather the skills you want over several storylines until you refined the knowledge pool of the char to what you want him.
As others have said, the intent is to work with the options available and build up heroes over multiple campaigns. However, if you want to have more control over hero abilities from the start, there's a mod that removes the reroll cost

Yeah, this.

I like being surprised by how my characters develop. :P
