In general, Wildermyth leans into its procedural nature, so even if you make a party with specific events in mind, it may not always happen how you're planning. If you want to tell a very specific story, you can turn on devMode Pick Events to choose exactly what events happen (though I understand that's probably not a satisfying solution).
Given the way you're talking about things, I'm assuming you might've already done this, but it may be worth noting that you can view the exact targeting for events on the wiki and in the in-game Comic Editor itself.
(Guides aren't always accurate about these things, either.)
