What does Inhabited do?
Is this something I ought to try to avoid ("resist") or accept?

On its own, nothing. It allows you access to a few different events while you hadve it, including the Shadow transformation if you don't get rid of it.

I see; thanks!

And you can get rid of it once you get it, too?

Yep! Once you've got the transformation, you can freely take the Hook quest, and it'll never bother you again!

Got it - thanks. I will probably try to avoid it altogether in the future though. I don't want the transformation either ;(

You can resolve the hook quest and then you won't be able to get the transformation! :D

The problem is I don't know how to do so though. One thing I don't like about this game is that not everything is documented and a wrong choice could really screw you over...

Ah. Hook quests just... randomly pop up. You can also refuse the transformation, though I think you'll get a penalty for the rest of the chapter or something.
I had a female warrior trigger the "I know what you did" event which led to her getting "Inhabited". Sadly at the end of the chapter she got inhabited she retired without getting any opportunity for a transformation LOL

Do you get any transformation - or a particular transformation? Again, Wiki has a lot of information missing - albeit I do understand that it is community-edited.

I was told Shame, Slacker, and Weird are the top Hooks according to a Youtube guide, but I think I will just avoid the Hooks with Inhabited potential, because I really do not want to deal with it.
I've had lots of characters with elemental transformations. My character who I've named after my username and is also a warrior, has Celestial hair, after two chapters he gained an arm and a leg. I've had a female wolf Hunter, a male and female Ctystal eyed hunters, from two different campaigns, a Fire armed Mystic, a fire armed hunter and a storm touched mystic. I'm still hoping desperately for a bird transformation for a character but I don't stress out about it too much. Screw guides and wikis, I want to experience this game totally blind. I also don't create characters with necessary hooks in mind as I create my characters depending on how I see them in my head canon.

I have one warrior with the associated transformation... she is an absolute speed demon but I've combined it with Zealous Leap and Windwalk so that I can just drop her where-ever I need her to be.
