Can you stop transformation part-way?
For instance, I got the Crowtouched event, and I declined, because I only want the wings - not the others. Now, assuming I had taken the wings, can I refuse future feet and hands transformations?

Yep! Note that it will keep asking until all your slots have filled, but they can freely fill those slots with other transformations (as long as they aren't mutually exclusive).

If you do that, though, it'll often take a lot longer to get transformations you want. Because you'll keep having limbs try and change into crows instead of what you may actually want.

What if I do not want limbs at all? I just want Crow Wings.

You'll be able to keep declining the offers of transformations, but there's no way to say "no, I don't want any more, ever, do not ask me again," I'm afraid.

And also, make sure to not accept any lose-a-limb Maim options, as they'll replace the maimed limb with a transformation limb.

I see. So too much of a hassle then. I will just go for Hawk or Drauven wings then.

I believe most transformations "Themes" have at least 5 elements (some have 6). You can usually pick which the first one is, and can choose not to progress them further. But yes, the game will ask you after each chapter.

My favorite Mystic has the Botanical head transformation. And I've ALWAYS got to remember not to progress it (because she's a Mystic and she's slow enough already, especially given that she's usually in her 80's or 90's by the end of a campaign). Not to mention, I'd rather she was carrying a Staff.

Hmm, if it is once per chapter, then I guess it's not bad. I was afraid of random, spamming events galore.

By the way, how necessary are transformations? Can you, for instance, comfortably handle the highest difficulty without any transformations - as long as the rest of the build is min/max-optimized?

Transformations are not necessary, but do provide different combat options and perks.
Leg transforms usually give you a trade off (such as reducing block to boost warding) which if chosen carefully can improve a hero's build.
Arms are a little more restricting, as they usually provide a new attack or ability at the cost of wielding weapons (at least two-handed ones). These may lead to 'one-trick-pony' builds, but if the trick is good enough, that's not a bad thing.
Head transformations are either cosmetic or give some minor benefit, and generally make the hero ineligible for other transformations (except wings and tails).
Wings have no down side, since everyone could use a little more speed! Likewise tails, though the aesthetics sometimes make me hesitate about adding those.

Overall, I love transformations, and groom my heroes carefully to have the right fantastic physiology. At chapter ends, I do have to be careful about not allowing the wrong limbs to change, but it's not a big deal.

That's why I want to only get wings (and skins) in terms of transformations. I do not want the others due to the very aesthetic concerns you stress.

Perfectly valid choice! Some of my adventurers have been affected by several different themes, and even I feel a little sorry for them. They still get romantic partners, so I guess folks in the Yondering are very accepting of body mods. :D

You can also get a second transformation to block things. I think the frost-change (With the ice warlock) will block head changes and doesn't spread currently).

And yeah, the "do you want to advance the transform" is only between chapters.

I have a crow-winged fire-lady as an example.
