I tailor my infusion skill to the enemy:
I encounter a lot of stone and bone Interfusion nodes fighting Deepists or Thrixl for example.
With Morthagi, it is nearly no wood but plenty of tools and a lot of books and statues. And I would avoid bringing fire or debris - the Butler will make you choke on them.
There is no universal build.
The other abilities aren't needed, but utility abilities like Bard, Windwalk, and Heroism work well for Mystics (although they are great on all characters). Elementalist is also worth noting because it keeps your fires permanent.
I also like Wisdom on mystics because it dramatically reduces your clear times and is valuable for legacy characters that might have came into games late and are part of your B team.
A build I would like to try is elementalist and arches+ so you can get well placed Splintersalvos off reliably, but haven't got the skills at the right time to try it.
two of my favorites:
1) vigorflow x 2, openmind, soulsplit option, look for book +1 infuse. Use a bow. One shot near anything on 3 act games. Even higher stuff 2 shots is better than most can do.
2) ignite x 2 + anything to support this as above.
for a full build, consider the star bomb staff (climb a tree to recover one), or the celestial/ lightning transforms. A gem eye + stunt is nice.
I tried some of the melee transforms but even with a lot of infusions and soulsplitting you lack the armor to really take a hit. I kept dying with melee builds.
arches is just amazing. But that isn't a build, its one skill, you can work it into anything.

It is hard to speak about "best X build" since I found a lot of builds shine in different situations. My melee mystic you can see in the showcase thread e.g. I consider awesome with Indignance and Ignite+. Let her just walk straight into enemies and deal massive damage in melee and range.
Recently I had the luck to have a mystic transformed into a wolf, which is ridiculous strong too with Frenzy (attack three times action). That with heroism and rock shield is fun to play too.
I am also a fan of naturalist+ignite.
Then again: nothing I would consider best, yet a lot fun to play. With the statements about warriors and hunters of yours you might be surprised how much you miss out once you try other builds which is are not straightforward and probably odd.
But then once you seen a mystic which deals 20+ damage as melee without weapons, while killing all the small fry on the way from A to B, you might get an idea about that.
- Ignite+ & long reach - you can always flank and do multi-target attacks.
- Arches+ and elementalist+ is the master of AoE splinter salvo.
- Indulgence+ & soul slicing/stone scribber offers a good close range utility with enough survivability.
- Mythweaver+ and humanist+ really excel when a good object type shows up.
- Vigorflow+ & open mind is a master one hit ko sniper. (and other physical attacks from themes)
Of course you can combine 2 of these combos on the same character. It's also notwworth that Naturalist+ or stonescribe+ are quite good with multiple mystics due creating massive amounts of objects.I have to also give a shout out for the Mythweaver (+) ability – lots of solid damage, crowd control with stuns and the ability to give a character a boost to Potency (which can be nice for characters with transformation abilities or more mundane passives like Piercing Shots).
I love it, but after 100+ hours, still haven't tried out all the ideas here.
Mostly just using Naturist and Ignite to win, fun enough...
How do you use book and bow at same time?
